The door to my chambers closes behind me with a soft click, shutting out the chaos of the night. For a moment, I just stand there, letting the familiar space settle around me…the elegant furniture, the silk curtains and the big extravagant bed that has never felt like mine.
This room has been my gilded cage ever since I arrived and after tonight, I am finally leaving it behind.
"My lady!"
Mia rushes toward me from where she had been sitting by the window.
Her face is a mixture of relief and worry. Her hands grip my arms as she looks at me over, checking for injuries.
"I heard a horn," she says urgently. "It sounded like a warning call, but then nothing followed. What happened out there Princess?Are you alright?" The worry in her eyes is unmistakable.
"I'm fine, Mia." I gently extract
