Kylie settled into her new routine, navigating the ups and downs of high school life. She found solace in her classes, particularly English and Art, where she could lose herself in her drawings.
Amir continued to be friendly, but Kylie kept her distance, unsure if she this new friendship was a good idea. Mishka and Aliyah, on the other hand, became her go-to lunch buddies, and the three of them explored the school's hidden corners.
As she walked into the electrical classroom, she saw Amir sitting at a table. He smiled, and she felt a sense of disappointment.
"Hey, Kylie! I didn't know you were into also taking electrical" Amir said, making room for her beside him.
Kylie shrugged, trying to play it cool. "Just thought I'd give it a try."
The departments instructor, Mr.Stein, began the class, and Kylie found herself lost in the discussion, listening to others.
As the class progressed, Kylie became more engaged, asking questions and participating in the discussion. Amir glanced at her occasionally, but she avoided eye contact, focusing on the lesson.
After class, Mishka and Aliyah waited for her in the hallway. "Hey, how was electrical?" Mishka asked, curiosity etched on her face.
Kylie shrugged. "It was okay, I guess. Amir's in the class too."
Aliyah raised an eyebrow. "Oh, yeah? What's going on with you two?"
Kylie rolled her eyes. "Nothing's going on. We just keep running into each other."
Mishka grinned mischievously. "Maybe it's fate trying to bring you together."
Kylie laughed, shaking her head. "No way. I'm just trying to focus on my classes and get through this year."
As they walked to their next class, Kylie couldn't help but wonder if she was being too harsh on Amir. Maybe he was genuinely friendly and didn't deserve her wariness.
But for now, she was content to keep her distance and focus on her own path.
The next day was the school's sports day. Kylie woke up early, feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. She had never been a big fan of sports, but Mishka and Aliyah had convinced her to go to the day's events.
As she arrived at the field, Kylie felt a twinge of unease, wondering if she had made a mistake by going.
Mishka and Aliyah noticed her hesitation and came over to reassure her. "Hey, We're all just here to have fun," Mishka said, grinning.
The games began, and Kylie found herself enjoying the thrill of competition and the school spirit.
A new face approached the girls, smiling. "Hey, im Cody he said! And that is my friends Dane and Jahaziel."
Kylie smiled back, feeling a sense of warmth from Cody's friendly demeanor. "Hey, I'm Kylie. This is Mishka and Aliyah."
Cody nodded, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Cool, nice to meet you guys. We're just here to support our friends and have a good time."
Dane and Jahaziel chimed in with greetings, and the group of them stood together, watching the games. Kylie found herself laughing and joking with Cody, Dane, and Jahaziel, feeling a sense of ease she hadn't expected.
As the morning turned into afternoon, Kylie realized she was having a great time, even though she wasn't participating in the sports. She was enjoying the company of her friends and the new acquaintances she had made.
As the sports day came to a close, Kylie felt a sense of disappointment wash over her. She hadn't wanted the day to end, hadn't wanted to leave the warm and fuzzy feeling that had settled in her chest.
"Hey, we should exchange numbers," Cody said, as if reading her mind. "We can get to know each other beter"
Kylie smiled, feeling a sense of excitement. "Yeah, that sounds great."
As they exchanged numbers, Kylie couldn't help but feel grateful for the unexpected turn of events. She had been hesitant to come to the sports day, but it had ended up being one of the best days she'd had in a long time.
"Hey, let's take a selfie to remember this day," Aliyah said, pulling out her phone.
Kylie nodded, smiling, and the group of them huddled together, grinning from ear to ear.
As they said their goodbyes and headed off in different directions, Kylie felt a sense of belonging that she hadn't felt in a long time. She felt like she had found true friends in Mishka, Aliyah, and maybe even Cody.
Kylie was snapped out of her mood by a loud hoot from her mother who was waiting for her.
Kylie's mom glared at her, her expression stern. "So, you had a good time today? You think making friends with those people is a good idea?"
Kylie felt a knot form in her stomach, sensing her mom's disapproval. "Yeah, they're really nice. And I had fun."
Her mom scoffed, her voice dripping with disdain. "Nice? You don't even know them, Kylie. They're just using you for their own entertainment. Mark my words, they'll turn on you soon enough."
Kylie felt a surge of frustration, tired of her mom's constant negativity. "That's not true, Mom. They're genuinely kind and caring. You don't even know them."
Her mom's expression turned even darker, her voice rising. "How dare you question me? I know what's best for you, Kylie. And those people are not it."
Kylie felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes, feeling hurt and trapped. She wished her mom could just be supportive and understanding for once.
Kylie took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. "Mom, please just listen to me. You're not giving me a chance to make my own decisions."
Her mom's expression didn't change, but her voice dropped to a cold, menacing tone. "You'll do what I say. And if you don't, there will be consequences."
Kylie felt a chill run down her spine, knowing that tone all too well. She knew that arguing further would only make things worse.
"Fine," she muttered, feeling defeated.
Her mom nodded, seeming to accept Kylie's surrender just as they arrived home. "Good. Now, go make dinner."Kylie's mom said.
Kylie went to the kitchen, feeling like a prisoner in her own home. She could feel tears prick at the corners of her eyes.
As she stood there, she couldn't help but think about her new friends and how they didn't know just what her home life was like. Would they even want to be friend her if they knew her truth? She questioned herself.
