“Whoa! What did I say? Take it easy there! I didn’t think you were that sensitive about talking about your future mate,” Cayo said knocking Stephen back to reality.
What was going on with him? He apparently had started to shift and his claws were out like he was ready to attack. He had to tame his inner wolf to keep him from lashing out at his surroundings. He had gone into survival mode, and had every intention of fighting for his life!
Stephen looked over at Cayo and could see a look of bewilderment on his face. This was the second time his mind reverted him to this unknown place. The feeling was surreal. It wasn’t as if he had dreamed what happened. He could tell the difference in that. This was a memory!
“I’m sorry, it was the screams,” Stephen said still trying to calm himself.
“Screams? I didn’t hear any screams. Do I need to call for your father?” Cayo looked worried and was halfway running the direction towards Stephen’s dad.
“No, wait. Don’t call him. I don’t want to alarm him. He’s the head guard on duty today and I know they have had some issues at the border. I don’t want to distract him.”
“Well then you have to tell me what’s going on, because you have me wiggin’ out! I thought you saw a ghost or something.” Cayo was now teasing him.
“I saw something from my past. When I was younger. This is the second time it has happened. I keep getting these flashes of memory at the most random times.” Stephen could tell Cayo was quite intrigued, because he had sat himself on the grass cross legged, and propped his elbows so that he could rest his cheeks in his hands and was batting his eyes like a love-struck teenage girl.
“I’m serious!” Stephen laughed and pushed him over.
“Okay, okay,” said Cayo. “So what about these dreams? Are they full of hot girls?” Cayo had a mischievous grin on his face.
The two started walking again heading for the training center. Stephen wasn’t quite sure how to explain what had happened, or what he saw.
“No, it was more like a nightmare. I think someone was in trouble.”
Cayo saw the look of seriousness in his friend’s eyes. Sure he was serious a lot of times, but this was different. There was a darkness to his blue pupils that intensified. It was a mix of dominance, and fear.
“So what do you think it means?” Cayo said.
“I don’t know,” said Stephen. “I feel like an inner instinct is trying to tell me something. I just have to figure out what it is.”
As the boys enter the training center the groups were just beginning to form, getting ready for today’s practice. Alpha Ajax was joining them this morning as he did on a regular basis when he had time. It must mean that the situation his father was dealing with was getting better, or else he wouldn’t have been here. That put his mind at ease a little bit.
Stephen paired up with his new partner, Liam. He sized him over and decided might be a capable component. He could tell by the look on Liam‘s face he did not still feel the same. Alpha Ajax stood off to the side and observed the training of his future guards. Stephen always impressed him, but he noticed something different about him recently. He was getting stronger. This wasn’t something that he had seen in a lot of his other recruits.
Ajax thought back to the night when he first met Stephen. He had been out roaming the borders checking on his guards when he suddenly heard a noise. He shifted because he thought that it might be a rogue trespassing onto their territory. He caught a scent of another wolf, and just as he was about to attack, he found a little boy with blond hair and bright blue eyes curled up next to a tree. It was freezing outside and there was a small amount of snow on the ground. The boy was blue from the cold and practically frozen to death. He knew that if he did not get him somewhere safe soon then he would probably die. He did not appear to be a child from a rogue, and there were no other wolves in sight.
Suddenly, John appeared. He had been on duty and was the closest guard nearby. He had sensed the trouble from Ajax and responded. When he approached the Alpha he saw Alpha Ajax knelt down on the ground holding the small child. He thought he was dead and John’s heart immediately began to break. There was an overwhelming sense of relief when he heard the boy caught.
They began discussing what to do with the child. The nearest pack outside of theirs was hours away. They weren’t quite sure how he made it into the Crescent Pack territory. They decided that someone must take in the child and care for him until his family came to claim him claim. John immediately volunteered. He and Melissa had been trying to have a baby of their own for quite some time. Melissa had experienced two miscarriages. The heartbreak that followed those experiences were almost unbearable. Melissa would turn cold and almost slip away and disappear into this deep spot in her mind. Thankfully, John was always able to pull her back. He knew that having a child in his home would bring his family great joy.
They quickly realized that the child had no memory or recollection of who he was or where he came from. He only knew he was 4 years-old, but they knew he should have been able to remember something from his past. No one ever came to claim the child. Eventually, they all assumed that his parents must be dead. Melissa and John had raised Stephen ever since. Ajax thought about how funny it was he only remembered his birthday. He wondered about his parents where they came from. Was he from a higher blood line? Was he a Beta? Even more, what if he was of an Alpha bloodline? He wondered if this would ever cause problems between he and Stephen. There could only be one Alpha in the pack. He shrugged the thought. It would be impossible.
Ajax looked over and laughed when he saw the plea on Liam’s face for someone to save him from his burly partner. He walked over to the two opponents, and Liam was relieved when Ajax offered to take his place.
“Think today will be the day you finally beat me?” Ajax said laughingly.
“I’ll never know unless I try! I turn 18 next week, and you’re getting pretty old.” Stephen snapped back with a wide grin.
“Well, this shouldn’t take too long then.” Ajax said before launching towards him.
The Alpha was correct; he still had the upper hand.
