The rough bark of the ancient oak bit into Selene’s back as Kael closed the distance between them. The scent of ozone, damp pine, and the metallic tang of rogue blood rolled off him in suffocating waves. He didn't look like the pristine, ruthless Alpha who had stood over her on the marble dais hours ago. His velvet coat was torn, spattered with dark gore, and his raven hair fell wildly across a brow glistening with sweat. But it was his eyes that made Selene's lungs seize. The cold, icy distance was completely gone, replaced by a raw, unhinged fervor that seemed to burn straight through the twilight haze.
"Stay back," Selene choked out, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to sound brave. She reached blindly for her waist, forgetting for a split second that her skinning knife was buried somewhere in the wet leaves yards away. "You banished me, Kael. Pack law is clear. Step over the boundary, and I’m rogue prey. You have no rights to me."
"Pack law be damned," Kael growled, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that resonated straight into her ribs. In one swift movement, he bridged the remaining space, slamming his left palm against the trunk right beside her head. The sheer heat radiating off his body hit her like a physical wall, cutting off the biting chill of the Silver Forest. Selene tried to duck beneath his arm, but Kael caught her wrist. His grip was broad, heavy, and searing hot, yet surprisingly careful not pressing against the open wounds left by the whip hours before.
"Let me go," she whispered, her heart battering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
"I can't." The words escaped Kael in a ragged exhale. He stepped closer, crowding her until the metal buttons of his tunic brushed the torn front of her dress. His gaze dropped to her throat, tracking the frantic flutter of her pulse, before rising to lock with hers. "You think I wanted to throw you in that cell, Selene? You think watching Thomas lay a hand on you didn't nearly rip my wolf out of my skin?"
"You stood there!" Selene fired back, anger flaring hot enough to burn away her fear. She shoved against his broad torso, feeling the rock-hard muscle beneath his tunic. He didn't budge an inch. "You watched him mock me! You let Elder William drag me down to the stone dungeons, and then you turned your back on me in front of the whole court!"
A sharp flash of agony crossed Kael’s features, so quickly she almost missed it. His thumb brushed over the delicate skin of her inner wrist, sending an unwanted jolt of spark-like electricity rushing straight to her core. The mate bond, unyielding and relentless, hummed between them, defying the exile, defying the hate.
"Because if I hadn't banished you, William would have executed you on the spot," Kael confessed, his eyes shifting to a stormy grey. His face lowered, his lips lingering just inches from the curve of her jaw, his warm breath fanning across her damp skin. "The Elders know what you are, Selene. Or at least... they suspect it. I had to get you out of the fortress before they put a silver blade through your heart."
Selene caught her breath, her mind whirling. He saved me? But the White Wolf’s warning echoed in her head, clashing horribly with Kael's desperate confession. When the shadow hunter claims the silver-eyed Alpha, the seal will shatter. One will die so the other may reign.
"They think I'm just a base-born orphan," Selene stammered, trying desperately to ignore the heat spreading through her limbs as Kael’s free hand gently cupped the back of her neck, his fingers sliding into her hair.
"They know you aren't," Kael whispered, his blue-grey eyes searching hers with desperate vulnerability. "And so do I. Your scent... it's not normal, Selene. It's ancient."
He pulled her a fraction of an inch closer, closing the painful gap between them. For an agonizing second, Selene thought he was going to kiss her. Her blood ran hot, traitorous instincts urging her to lean into him, to bury her face in the crook of his neck and let the bond wash away the terrifying cold of the woods.
Kael leaned down, his lips brushing the shell of her ear as he let out a harsh breath. "I swore I’d protect this pack," he murmured, his voice laced with a tragic promise. "But the moment I saw you on that court floor, I knew I'd burn the whole damn territory to the ground before I let them touch you again."
Selene's breath hitched. The slow-burn pull between them was suffocating, a heavy, intoxicating gravity pulling them both under. She lifted a hand, her fingertips hovering over his jaw, torn between pushing him away and pulling him closer. Then, Kael went stiff as iron.
His grip on her wrist tightened, his head snapping toward the dense pine trees to their left. The silver sheen in his eyes flickered erratically, turning a harsh, metallic hue.
"Kael?" Selene whispered, the romantic haze shattering instantly. A soft, wet click echoed from his ribs. Kael let out a sharp, choked gasp. He stumbled backward, breaking contact. Selene watched in horror as his hand flew to his neck. Beneath his skin, black, vein-like tendrils were rapidly spreading up toward his jawline, a toxic corruption creeping under his flesh like living ink. He dropped to one knee, clutching his throat, his breath coming in violent rasps.
"Kael!" Selene dropped beside him, her hands trembling as she grabbed his shoulders. His body was suddenly burning, so hot it felt like it would blister her hands. "What's happening to you?!"
Kael grabbed her collar, pulling her down until her ear was level with his bleeding lips.
"The mark..." he choked out, black liquid oozing past his lips as his eyes began to roll into the back of his head. "It wasn't... a curse from the Elders... It was a poison... and someone inside the court... just activated it..."
Before Selene could process the terror in his voice, the heavy foliage around them rustled violently. A dozen shadow-draped, cloaked figures stepped out from the fog, crossbows raised, silver-tipped bolts trained directly on Kael’s heart.
