After dinner, we all make our way back toward the front of the house, still talking and laughing. Harmony truly is a very sweet person. We get talking about cooking and recipes. The places I would love to travel to, and the places she has been and recommends. She was right. By the end of the evening, I do feel like we have become pretty great friends. I can see now where Zane gets his charismatic personality from. You can’t help but just want to be near these two. They ooze self-confidence. It makes you feel special and important that they find you worthy of their time and energy. “Well, I suppose it’s time for me to get you home, right?” Zane touches the small of my back. Electric sparks zip to my toes, making me miss a step. Brendon, however, is the one who snatches my hand to stop me from falling. A deep blush blooms on my cheeks, being between both of the boys, with them touching me. As fast as he snatched my hand, he ripped it away just as quickly, if not quicker. Seeking a distraction, I try to answer Zane’s question but start to stutter again. “Yes, I—it’s getting late. Dinner was amazing, Mr. and Mrs. O’Brien. Thank you so much for having me.” Harmony gives me another big hug before joining her husband. This woman is everything I imagined my mom to be. Haresan gives me a strong handshake. “You are welcome anytime, dear. It was lovely meeting you. Don’t be a stranger now.” As Zane and I walk to the door, Daniel and Brendon come up behind us. “Why don’t I drive you?” Daniel says. Both Zane and Brendon look at Daniel with alarm on their faces. “It’s far too late for you to be driving across town, my boy. It’s practically on my way after all.” “I can’t ask you to do that. Plus, her house is nowhere near yours, Uncle D.” “Nonsense, Brendon and I are heading to the office for a while anyway. We have our driver with us. It won’t be but 10 min. Deviation from our trip.” “You are going to the office now?” Zane asks, turning to Brendon to back him up, “At 8:00 at night?” Brendon looks at his father for a moment too long before answering. “Yes… We have some overseas accounts to meet with this evening over Zoom.” He is clearly lying. Brendon is almost as bad as I am. He has all the tell-tale signs: a concerned crease between the eyebrows and a long pause between answer and explanation. His hands are squeezing into fists, releasing, and then squeezing again like he doesn’t know what to do with the uncomfortable energy. He seems curious about what Daniel has planned as well. I can tell by the way his eyes zero in on his father in an almost predatory way. He’s waiting for the tiger to strike. “Please, it would be my pleasure to escort Ms. Gates home. Shall we, dear?” Daniel extends his arm to me, and his eyes blaze with a darkness that makes my legs shake. The message is clear. Daniel wishes to speak to me alone. I don’t think he is going to ask nicely again. “I don’t think that would be appropriate, Uncle D. Besides, what kind of boyfriend allows his date to be sent home with someone else?” Zane tries to persuade him, but the fire behind Daniel’s eyes makes me worry for us all. As much as I don’t want to be anywhere near this man, I fear what he may do if he doesn’t get his way now. I know men like him; this is him being as kind as possible about whatever problem he has now. If he doesn’t get his way… my quiet little life could go up in flames by this time tomorrow, and even Zane wouldn’t be able to stop it. “It’s fine, Zane; thank you so much for everything today. I’ll see you at school.” I lean in to kiss him on his cheek; Zane has other plans. He turns his head at the last minute, smashing his lips into mine. My eyes fly open in shock. His lips are soft yet firm. A numbing sensation follows his touch. His hand snakes to the spot behind my ear, holding me in place. My eyes close against my will. Then I do the one thing I never thought I would. I kissed him back. It’s over far faster than I imagined my first kiss to be, but I also never expected it to be with Zane… in his mansion… while his uncle and cousin watched… I could feel their eyes on us the entire time. “Be safe, and let me know when you get home.” Those balls of glacier ice make my fast-beating heart skip a much-needed beat. “…okay.” My voice is breathless. I never accepted Daniel’s offer of his arm to escort me out. So Brendon, being Brendon, takes my arm, steering me towards the door, then to his father’s small limousine. He’s acting like I did something wrong and is escorting a toddler out of the supermarket for being bratty. A man in a black suit and sunglasses opens the door for the three of us. Sunglasses… at night? classic. My mind is in a cloudy haze. I just had my first kiss. It didn’t feel quite like I thought it would. I suppose the numbing sensation is the butterflies people always talk about… Then again, I’m sure Zane wasn’t trying to kiss me for pleasure but more for the show. To prove to his family that I matter to him and for them to trust me. However, that plan seems to have surely failed, since Zane’s uncle is suspicious of me. Daniel and Brendon sit on the seats across from me. The tension in this car can be cut with a knife. I start fidgeting, anxiously waiting for someone to speak first. I despise awkward silence. “Well, well, well, you seem to have made quite the impression this evening.” Daniel’s voice is smooth yet raspy. “I—I’m sorry you had to s-see that. I didn’t realize he was going to, umm, k-kiss me in front of you. I hope it didn’t make you uncomfortable.” He smiles at me with a Cheshire cat smile. Making my skin crawl. “Very few things make me uncomfortable, dear. Teenagers engaging in some PDA isn’t one of them.” He opens a small door on a mini-fridge and pours himself a dark drink in a clear glass. He drinks a lot. However many he had before dinner, 2 glasses of wine with dinner, and another drink while we were all talking. Now he’s back at it. He catches me staring. “Would you like a drink?” he offers. “…I’m 17, Sir.” “I won’t tell,” he sings. “Thank you, Sir. But I’ll have to decline. I’m not much of a drinker.” “Suit yourself.” He pours a second glass anyway, handing it to Brendon. Brendon takes a small sip, swirling it around, then swings back the rest of the shot. His Adam’s apple moves, bobbing up and down. A small drop on the side of his mouth starts to fall, but his tongue catches it. I’m hypnotized. His eyes finally land on me, staring at him. He doesn’t look away, holding me captive for a solid minute. That amount of time has never seemed so long before. Something is about to happen. Something bad. Somehow, I almost see sorrow in his eyes. “So tell me more about yourself, Amity. Any girl special enough to steal my nephew’s attention is surely one I must get to know well. How long have you two been seeing each other?” “Just recently, but as we mentioned earlier, we’ve known each other a long time.” “I see… and yet he has never mentioned you before tonight.” I’m not sure how to answer that, so I just sit quietly. “You do seem very familiar to me. Are you sure I don’t know your parents?” He asks the question like he already knows the answer; perhaps he does… The O’Brien family deals in loans. My stepfather left town because he owed the wrong people money. Brendon scares the s**t out of me, and Zane’s behavior tonight was bizarre. Sounds like the wrong type of people to me. He wanted to know how often my stepdad was in town, and now he is asking again. The haze is slowly becoming a dark, foggy muck in my head. The level of trouble I have found myself in isn’t lost on me. I never did find out how much my father owes. I have just been paying them as much as possible, knowing more was owed. I sit back in my seat, crossing my arms, preparing for the blow. Anger rages to the surface, begging to be set free. Hopefully, I can keep it contained, at least for now. “How much does he owe you?” “Excuse me?” Daniel asks, surprised. “How much?” “I’m afraid you have me at a loss, Dear. What do you mean?” His eyes squint, sizing me up. Then Daniel carefully picks some nonexistent lint from his pants. Avoiding eye contact. “You didn’t ask where we were heading, you know where I live without being told. You know the exact time difference between my house and your office. You have asked about John at least 5 times since dinner. So… How much does John owe you?” I say slower. “I knew there was more to that head than just a pretty face. How much does he owe? If I remember correctly, the number is right around $20,000?” He asks Brendon. “$21,520” Brendon answers like a robot. emotionless. “You know right offhand?” I ask Brendon. Brendon runs a finger around the rim of his glass, still avoiding eye contact. After a moment when I think he is going to refuse to answer me, he takes a long breath in, holds it for 1, 2, 3, 4 seconds, then grinds his jaw. Finally, he speaks. “I have been the main account runner for loans of $100,000 and under for the past 2 years. I know all of my accounts’ details, especially the ones we send patrols to.” Patrols… Shadow has warned me before about closing more of my windows because he wasn’t always the only person on my street late at night… I thought he meant people just walking down the street. Could he have been referring to Brendon’s patrols? “You spying on me?” Anger peeks right at the surface. Brendon’s jaw ticks with his unwillingness to answer my questions. Daniel steps in for him. “Standard protocol, sweetheart.” “I pay your men every month.” Rage is bubbling up inside of me. The nerve of this guy! “Yes, thank you for that. This is why I am allowing this civil conversation before we have to resort to more unnecessary tactics. This debt shouldn’t have had to be resting on your shoulders, dear girl, but I wasn’t the monster who left it to you.” No, you’re just the monster enforcing it. “However, I’m afraid the deadline is almost up.” “When is it up?” “Technically, it is due next month; however, since I am an understanding man, I have extended the deadline to the end of your school year.” How charitable. “Why was I not told?” “If you were the person with whom I made the deal, you would have been. Since your POS father left you this debt. I’m extending it as a courtesy.” “You clearly know who I am, where I live, where I go to school, and who’s actually paying you the money. Your men come to my house every month to get the money. A notification wouldn’t have been hard to send to me… You wanted me not to pay it. You’re hoping I can’t pay so you can have something else…what is it?” Daniel chuckles. “OK, you got me,” he says, holding his hands up. “Damn, I underestimated you.” “I get that a lot.” He swirls the liquor around in his glass a few times. Thinking over his next words. Then downs the rest of it as Brendon did. Brendon, I knew he was trouble. I knew to stay away from him. If only I had listened to my gut sooner. And to think I was starting to feel sorry for him after seeing how his family treats him. But he is just like his father. Mirror images of one another. Pure evil wrapped up in a pretty little bow. “Do you know what we do at O’Brien Inc.?” That’s the name of their business? Not very official-sounding. “I’m going to go out on a limb here and say you handle loans.” His dark smile almost reaches his eyes. “Loans… yes. We loan many items. Money, cars, property…people.” His eyes run the length of my body. This s**t just took a turn for the train wreck express. “P-People?” “Yes, chauffeurs, accountants, security, dancers, escorts, etc.” He tips his empty glass towards me. Please no… “And what is it you want with me?” “Personally, I don’t want anything from you. I want my money and a message. Other than that, I have no interest in you, despite your justified reasoning behind my motives here. Whatever amount is due by June 10th is the amount I will make from your … services.” My services… I don’t swear often, but f**k! f**k! f**k! I’m hyperventilating. “It’s nothing personal, Doll face, just business.” “It’s pretty f*****g personal to me.” Don’t cry… don’t cry. “I get that a lot.” He uses my own words against me. I have never felt the need to kill someone before, but damn, I want to kill this sleazebag. “So, now that you know some insider info, we have a problem. You understand I can’t just let you go running around unaccompanied anymore. People tend to make stupid decisions when put in these positions.” “Like skipping town, leaving the debt to other people?” He almost smiles a happy grin. As if he’s happy, I’m following his train of thought. “Exactly! I’m upping security. Don’t go doing anything stupid, little girl. As of now, you work for me. Report to my office after school.” “Work for you?” “Consider this an olive branch if you will. Zane has taken an interest in you. I wish to see my nephew happy. I’ll give you a chance to prove your worth, before we need to resort to… other tactics. Come work for me, and we can see how close you get to the owed total before the deadline. Your new sweetie pie can bring you with him on Monday. Welcome to the family, Ms. Gates.”
