Alyssa couldn't believe it. She was finally in New York, the land of her dreams. She had waited for this day and she was glad to have fulfilled it despite the fact that she had escaped from the Countryside in the middle of the night without telling Maya. Right now, she felt guilty but she was happy that she'd come to New York.
New York was so big. The buildings were taller than she'd seen in her life and the people were so many.
There were other shocks that came with the big city. One of which was that there were a lot more Brawn Shredders and they usually held reputable positions.
Separation of the economic class was much more obvious and a lot more brutal. Those who couldn’t afford the inflated prices were pushed towards the outskirts, where everything was subpar. Where the streets were dirty and the crimes drifted from petty to inhumane.
Also, the cost of living was triple of what it was at the Countryside With the money she had saved, she had rented out a small room in a run down apartment and now, she had only five dollars to her name.
Alyssa wouldn’t give up, her goal was to put her degree to use by earning a position at a fast rising company and despite the many rejections of the past weeks since she arrived, she was hopeful.
As long as she kept going, it was all that mattered.
Her train made it into the city, she yawned slightly, getting off, taking out a piece of newspaper she had cut off. She took a quick inspection walking off into the street, heading for one of the tall skyscrapers. She’d seen an advertisement for a job placement and decided to check it out. The newspaper had been lying around the convenience store and was about to throw it out till her eyes caught the advertisement.
She stepped in the extremely large building, immediately feeling out of place and awfully confused. The company's inscription read Bells Construction company, she noted the name and sighed deeply, hoping she'd get the job.
Three women stood behind the reception, they were full of glamour and poise. Without knowing what to do, she walked up to them with a polite smile.
“Hi,” she muttered
At first, they ignored her before the woman in the middle of the three answered with a strained expression, “What are you doing here?’
She blinked, “Hi, um… your company put out an advertisement for a job opening.”
The woman's eyebrows furrowed, “Job opening in this company?”
Alyssa smiled, “Yes, on the newspaper.”
The woman's jaw dropped open, “Did you just say… the newspaper?”
The woman near her snickered, “Is she okay?” One of them asked.
“What newspaper?” Another asked.
Shyly, she brought out the piece of newspaper she’d placed in her pocket. Immediately, they all began laughing. Her face flushed in embarrassment and she blinked her eyes to stop her from shedding tears, she didn't want to cry in front of them.
“You cannot be serious. What do you think this is? The 1900’s?” the woman mocked.
“Did you look at the place you walked into before doing something as embarrassing as this? If we had a job opening we definitely wouldn’t put it in the… newspaper.”
“I-I’m so sorry,” Alyssa turned, quickly walking out.
If she’d stayed there a moment longer she might’ve started sobbing. She stood, letting out a sigh, covering her flushed face with her hands. When she felt as though she’d gathered enough strength, she began walking aimlessly and made a mental note not to go there again.
“Everything is fine, open your eyes.” That familiar voice whispered in her subconscious.
She thought about the stranger she had met a month ago, he always flashed into her mind especially in moments where her own determination and faith wavered. Her eyes opened, and she wondered if she would ever see him again. She wished to see him, just one more time so he could tell her that everything would be fine again.
Alyssa looked forward when someone suddenly bumped her shoulder, walking past her. She didn't pay attention to it until she heard a voice speak.
“Sorry,”
The lush baritone and the warmth that pulsed from it. She knew that voice. Too well.
It was the same voice that had said. “The winter will pass and spring will come again, follow the tides of the new season and you’ll definitely find the answer.”
She whipped around immediately, her eyes searching frantically for him, hand on her rapidly beating chest but she couldn't find him in the crowd. Had she just been hearing things?
Alyssa hoped she wasn't. Slowly, she looked to the ground and something caught her eyes. A card lay on the floor. She bent, picking it up, wiping the slight dust.
She stared at the content of the card. It read;
Dylan Antonio.
CEO, Bells Construction.
