JACE'S POV
A few days before the tutoring session at my place, Mr. Schafer told me to stay behind after school. Normally, that wouldn’t mean anything, but the look on his face made something in my chest tighten.
“Jace, I’ve got bad news and good news,” he said, crossing his arms. “Which do you want first?”
“Bad news. Better to get that out early,” I answered.
“The bad news is… you can’t graduate if you don’t pass Physics.”
My heart stuttered. Then kicked back into motion.
“And the good news,” he continued, “is that I have the solution.”
I exhaled slowly. “Okay… what’s the solution?”
“A tutor. And I’ve already chosen the perfect person. Best in Physics. She's a kind kid. Very patient.”
“A… she?” I blinked. “Who?”
“Charlotte Hart,” he said proudly. “Brightest student I’ve ever taught. She’s in your class, though I don’t know if you’ve noticed.”
Noticed? No. Not really.
“Jace,” he added, “you do want to graduate, right?”
“Of course. You know my parents will literally collapse if I don’t get into MIT.”
“Then Charlotte is your best bet. I’ll talk to her and set things up.”
Fantastic. I needed help, and apparently my future now depended on a girl I barely knew.
Perfect.

“Dude, what’s up with you?” Chase asked the next day at his locker. “You’ve been acting like a statue since Schafer talked to you. He drop any bombs?”
“Nah. I just need a Physics tutor to graduate. And that tutor is Charlotte Hart.” I rubbed my face. “I barely even noticed her till now.”
Chase laughed. “Well bro, either let her tutor you or get ready to face your parents. And I vote you save yourself.”
He wasn’t wrong.
It’s not that I’m dumb — Physics just hates me. And I hate it back.
Plus my parents… Tech Mogul Father + Oil Heiress Mother equals an impossible combination of expectations.
They expect MIT. They expect me to continue the family empire.
Failing Physics is… not part of the plan.
So yeah, tutoring with Charlotte for a month suddenly seemed like a very small price.

The Next Day…
In Physics class, for the first time ever, I actually looked at Charlotte Hart properly.
She wasn’t stunning like Priscilla — who, unfortunately, was a constant annoyance in my life — but Charlotte had her own kind of pretty. Soft. Unassuming. If you ignored the thick glasses and braces, she was actually… kind of cute.
“Sorry—excuse me,” she said as she moved past my desk, and it was then I saw her eyes.
Green. Round. Expressive.
Huh.
Minutes flew by and class ended before I knew it. I took a breath, ran a hand through my hair, and walked up to her as she packed her books.
“Um… Charlotte, right? We’re supposed to go see Schafer now.”
She froze, blinked at me like I’d spoken Greek, then nodded.
Inside his office, Schafer clapped once. “Charlotte, Jace needs help with Physics or he won’t graduate. Would it be too much trouble to tutor him every Wednesday for the next month?”
“No problem, Mr. Schafer,” she said with a bright smile. “It’s no hassle.”
“Perfect.” He waved us out. “You two can decide the details.”
Charlotte turned to me. “So… library? Or Benny’s?”
“How about we alternate houses?” I suggested. “I can drive us on the days we’re using my place.”
She nodded. “Sounds like a plan.”
“Great. And thanks again. I really do need your help.”

After school…
I was standing beside my car when Priscilla Turner materialized out of nowhere.
“Jaaace,” she whispered, dragging her finger down my chest with one of her talon-like nails. “Waiting for me?”
“No,” I said bluntly. “And I don’t know why you’d think so. I’ve told you to leave me alone like a hundred times.”
I removed her finger from my shirt.
“Great,” I muttered. “Now I have your microorganisms on me.”
Her eyes flashed. “Whatever. But mark my words, Jace — you and I will be together.”
“Not in this lifetime,” I muttered as she stormed off.
I was still brushing imaginary germs off my shirt when Charlotte approached.
“Hey, sorry I’m late. Had to tell my best friend Flo I’d be going with you today.”
Flo. Yeah, I knew her. The fierce brunette who followed Charlotte around like a protective mother hen. Rumor was, she had beef with Priscilla for bullying Charlotte. Honestly, I couldn’t blame her.
“It’s fine,” I said. “Let’s go.”
I led her to my Porsche 911 — my birthday gift from my parents. Black leather interior, sleek design. My pride and joy.
“Woah… nice car,” Charlotte breathed.
“Thanks.” I tried not to look smug as we drove off.
But if she thought the car was a lot, she definitely wasn’t ready for the house.
We pulled up to my family mansion — towering white columns, giant windows, modern-meets-classic vibe. The kind of place that screamed old money even before you stepped inside.
Charlotte’s jaw practically touched the ground.
“Jace… I knew you were rich but this is… this is A LOT,” she said. “I’m half expecting the Ice Queen herself to glide down the stairs.”
I snorted. “Yeah, my folks come from old money.”
I pushed open the double doors and led her inside.
“We can study in my room,” I said. “There’s a desk there. Chairs too.”
She walked through the hallway like she’d entered Narnia — touching things, looking around with wide eyes.
“Wait here. I’ll get some snacks and drinks.”
“Okay, no problem. I’m all yours,” she said casually.
Meanwhile, my traitor brain misinterpreted that sentence completely, and my cheeks went warm.
Great. Perfect. Off to a strong start, Jace.
