Episode 6: When Control Breaks

1211 Words
Unstable. The word echoed in my head long after the training ground emptied. It clung to me. Followed me. Wrapped around my thoughts like a shadow I couldn’t escape. Unstable. Dangerous. A problem. I sat alone at the edge of the training pit, staring at my hands. They looked normal. Too normal. No sign of the force that had just exploded out of me… twice. No proof of the power that had sent a full-grown warrior flying without even touching him. But I felt it. Still there. Quiet now. But not gone. Waiting. “What if I lose control again?” I whispered to myself. The question hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. Because I already knew the answer. Someone could die. Footsteps approached behind me. Slow. Measured. I didn’t need to turn to know who it was. “You’re still here,” Kael said. I let out a dry laugh. “Where else would I go?” Silence. Then— “You didn’t run.” I frowned slightly, glancing over my shoulder. “Should I have?” “For most people, yes.” I turned fully to face him. “And for me?” His gaze held mine. “No.” Of course. Because I didn’t have that option. I pushed myself to my feet slowly, brushing the dust from my clothes. “What happens now?” I asked. “You keep training.” My chest tightened. “Even after what just happened?” “Especially after what just happened.” I shook my head, frustration bubbling again. “You saw it, Kael. I don’t control this—it controls me.” “Then we change that.” Simple. Too simple. Before I could argue— A sudden scream cut through the air. Sharp. Panicked. My heart jumped. “What was that?” I asked. Kael’s expression hardened instantly. “Stay here.” He turned— But I didn’t listen. I ran. The sound had come from deeper inside the compound. My feet moved before my mind could catch up, instinct pulling me forward. Another scream. Closer now. “Help—!” I rounded the corner— And froze. A young wolf—no older than me—was pinned against the wall by another warrior. But something was wrong. Very wrong. The warrior’s eyes were wild, unfocused… almost glowing. His body trembled violently, like he was fighting something inside himself. “Please—stop—!” the girl cried. He didn’t. His grip tightened. Too tight. “She’s choking!” I shouted. The warrior didn’t react. Didn’t even seem to hear me. “What’s wrong with him?” I asked, panic rising. Kael stepped in beside me, his gaze sharp. “He’s lost control.” The words hit me like a punch. Lost control. Just like me. The warrior let out a low, distorted growl, his body jerking unnaturally. “He’s going to kill her,” I said, my voice shaking. Kael moved forward— But something inside me snapped. No. Not again. Not in front of me. Before I could think— I ran forward. “Lira, stop—” Too late. I grabbed the warrior’s arm. The moment I touched him— Everything exploded. The power surged through me—faster, stronger, wilder than before. Not just reacting— Feeding. My breath hitched as the energy flooded my body, overwhelming, blinding. The warrior screamed. The girl dropped to the ground, gasping for air. But I couldn’t focus on that. Because the moment I touched him— Something connected. His chaos. My power. It collided. And it made everything worse. “Let go!” Kael’s voice cut through the noise. But I couldn’t. I physically couldn’t. My hand was locked onto him, like something inside me refused to release. The warrior’s body jerked violently— Then— He collapsed. Still. Silent. My heart stopped. “No… no, no—” I stumbled back, my hand finally releasing him. “What did I do?” I whispered, staring at his unmoving body. The world tilted. I couldn’t breathe. “I didn’t mean to—” “Lira.” Kael’s voice was sharp. Urgent. But I barely heard it. Because the power— It wasn’t stopping. It was growing. Spreading. Uncontrollable. My chest burned as the energy surged again, stronger than anything before. “I can’t stop it—!” I gasped. The ground beneath me cracked slightly. The air shifted. Darkened. “Lira, look at me.” I shook my head. “I’m going to hurt someone—” “Look at me!” His voice cut through everything. I froze. My eyes snapped to his. And for a split second— The world went quiet. But it didn’t last. The power surged again, violent and wild. “I can’t control it!” I cried. “Yes, you can.” “No, I can’t!” “You can.” His voice dropped. Lower. Stronger. Commanding. “Or I will stop you.” A chill ran down my spine. Before I could respond— He moved. Fast. Too fast. One second he was in front of me— The next— He had me pinned. My back hit the wall hard, his body pressing against mine, one hand gripping my wrist, the other braced beside my head. The moment he touched me— The power reacted. Violently. It surged between us, crackling in the air like lightning. But Kael didn’t let go. Didn’t flinch. “Focus,” he said, his voice low, intense. “I can’t—!” I gasped. “You can.” His grip tightened. “Feel it.” “I do feel it—that’s the problem!” “Then stop fighting it.” I froze. “What?” “Stop fighting,” he repeated. “Control doesn’t come from resistance.” The power surged again, but this time— I didn’t push it away. I let it exist. Raw. Dangerous. Mine. My breathing slowed slightly. The energy shifted. Not gone. But… calmer. Contained. My eyes lifted slowly to his. We were too close. Far too close. His breath brushed against my skin. His gaze locked onto mine—intense, unwavering, searching. “Good,” he murmured. The word sent a strange heat through me. The power flickered again— But didn’t explode. For the first time… It listened. A shaky breath escaped me. “I… did it.” “Barely,” he said. But there was something different in his voice. Not cold. Not distant. Something else. Something dangerous. His hand was still wrapped around my wrist. My body still pressed against his. And neither of us moved. The moment stretched. Charged. Unspoken. Then— He leaned in slightly. Close enough that my breath caught. “You’re more dangerous than I thought,” he said quietly. My heart pounded. “Is that a bad thing?” A pause. His eyes darkened. “That depends…” His voice dropped even lower. “…on whether you learn control.” And for the first time since this all began— I realized something terrifying. It wasn’t just the power I needed to control. It was what happened… When I was this close to him.
