CHAPTER 2

ATHENA POV. I wake up to my stomach churning and I feel like throwing up. I get up, hurrying to the bathroom but luckily my stomach settles so I simply splash cold water on my face. I look into the mirror to see dark circles under my eyes. I sigh. After twisting and turning all night I am not surprised. I quickly brush my teeth before turning on the shower and stripping off the rest of my teaching attire. After showering I head to my closet and put on black underwear. Just as I was about to pull on some matching black tights, I catch a glimpse of the four clawed scars on my arm, stretching from the inside of the bend of my elbow to cross over my forearm to my wrist, once again reminding me of Catheryn’s cruelty and that was when I was only a child back then. About five. Fear stirs my stomach once again, but I force myself to continue to get dressed in my tights and put on a long-sleeved V neck shirt. Lastly, I putt on some socks with my boots again and grab my brush and brush my hair and leave my hair to air dry. Sighing as I look in the mirror, I quickly apply a small amount of make up to cover the dark circles under my eyes before gathering my discarded jacket and clothing that I arrived in last night and fold it neatly before packing it in my shoulder bag that I have that was spelled to be bigger on the inside than what it looked like from the outside. I make sure that the bed was made and that I had everything before leaving the room. Just as I opened my door, one of the omega girls stood there with her fist in the air just as though she was about to knock. “Oh, you’re awake.” She says shyly, bowing her head in respect. I smile at her and wait for her to continue. “Alpha sent me to let you know that breakfast is ready.” She says, bowing again and rushing away down the hall without waiting for a reply. “Thank you.” I call after her just as her hair whipped around the corner. I step out of my room, close and lock the door behind me and head down to the dining room where the food is usually served. The dining room is full of unmated pack warriors that still live in the pack house along with my grandparents. I groan when I see that the only seat available is at the other end of the table, next to Donavan. I grit my teeth and walk into the room. Greeting all the familiar faces and plant a morning greeting kiss on nanna and grand’s cheeks before sitting down, trying to ignore the pest next to me. Just then the omegas come in with plates loaded with food and place it in front of everyone before disappearing back into the kitchen. As everyone digs in, my thoughts run to where we must go today. To make sure that the woman that tortured me and my sister as children was still securely locked away. Catheryn used to be one of our pack and my grandparents say that when she found that Vex was her mate that she completely changed. She went against the pack, even persuaded some of them to join them and killed those that stood up against her. A year before Vex supposedly burned to death whilst being trapped in his house, my grandparents managed to infiltrate Vex manor with some pack warriors along with Julia Castor and her magical team. They saved us along with other young wolves that were born into that life and just in time too. Catheryn was about to kill us, when Castor stormed through the door and intervened. That is when my grandparents found out that we existed and immediately took us in. We were five back then. Unfortunately, Catheryn managed to escape that day but eleven years later, at the age of sixteen, we managed to catch up to her and contain her, but I lost my sister soon after that day. I am still not sure what happened or why, but about a month later, she started to act strange and would disappear for days. And when she was at the pack, she was paranoid, even more secretive and her temper would flare up, making her lash out at others. One night she came to see grand, she was in an emotional state, almost hysterical. I still do not know what was said between them but that night she stormed out of the pack house and when grand sent six warriors after her, only two returned. She killed them and she was never seen or heard from again. There were rumours of course that she found her mate in one of Catheryn’s men and turned on us and for a while I blamed myself for not noticing the changes, but I was dealing with my own feelings regarding Donavan at the time. A hand on my thigh shakes me out of my thoughts and I am immediately pissed to see Donavan smirking at me as his hand travels up my thigh. I shiver in disgust and shove his hand off with a warning glare in his direction. “Don’t!” I warn lowly at him and ignoring him again, I take a bite of my breakfast before turning to my grandfather. “When will we be leaving?” I ask. Eager to get away from the i***t next to me as I am to see Catheryn still behind bars. “After breakfast.” He says, speaking to me but his eyes are on Donavan. I can’t decipher the look on his face, but I knew that I didn’t like it. Something tells me that he seated me next to Donavan on purpose, so I narrow my eyes at him. Grand notices my glare and glances back to his plate just as I feel Donavan’s hand on my thigh again. I grit my teeth; Well, I did warn him. I think to myself and quietly snap my fingers under the table at him. It is times like these that I was glad to be a half magical being. Smirking at myself I count down; five, four, three, two and just as I reached one Donavan leaps up from the table, screaming in pain and panic as he hops around and hitting his legs as he is trying to extinguish the flames on his pants. The wolves around the breakfast table is shocked into silence before laughter erupts. Even if they cannot prove it, everyone knows that it was me. Grand quickly grabs the juice jug and throws the contents on him, putting out the flames before glaring at me. I smile sweetly and innocently up at him as I see my grandmother hiding a smile behind her coffee cup. “Athena! What did I say about magic at the table?” He chastised, but before I could stand up for myself nanna interrupts. “Maybe, Donavan should keep his hands to himself then.” She states calmly behind her coffee cup but loudly for all to hear and I smirk smugly as nanna looks at Donavan, glaring daggers at him and this makes me feel better knowing that she supports my decision not to take him back. After Donavan stormed off to Goddess knows where, breakfast was actually enjoyable, and I liked talking to the others of the pack again and it almost felt like old times. Soon enough the time came that grandfather gathered some pack warriors. There were to many of us for my grandmother and me to transport them magically, so we left by car to the holding cells that he specially built for its sole occupant. It took us about fifteen minutes to get there, before we turned on the road towards the entrance. Grand looked confused and a worried expression crossed his face, and I immediately knew that something was wrong. “What? What is it?” I ask and the sinking feeling I already had in my stomach sank lower as we progressed further along the road. “I can’t link the guarding warriors.” He says and his eyes glazes over as he tries to do so again but I already guessed what that could mean. I was out of the car even before it came to a complete stop and the first thing that I noticed was the open cellar doors, visible from above the ground that led to the underground cell. My grandparents called out to me but by then I was too far ahead and without thinking twice, I jumped down the stairs, three at a time. At the bottom I slipped on something wet and if it wasn’t for the handrail that I instinctively grabbed on to, I would have fallen flat on my ass. The smell of blood hit me that I failed to notice due to the hastiness of getting down here, and I gasped loudly. It was purely due to my years of training that I managed not to utter a full-blown scream. There was blood and body parts of our pack warriors littered all the way down the hallway to the only cell at the end. The door looks like it was blasted open with so much force that some of the wall caved under it. I knew we were too late. I should have insisted that we come here last night when I arrived back at the pack. I knew, even without having to need to check her cell that she was gone and the static of magic that still lingered in the air I knew exactly who the one was that came for her. Vex! Vex has broken Catheryn out and it was only a matter of time before they found whatever he was looking for. Moon Goddess help us all!
