He felt a pain and a despair greater than he had ever felt before, and a loneliness beyond all loneliness. ‘I’ll get you out of there!’ he cried. ‘Help me. Tell me what I must do!’ Her voice seemed to shriek in his head and he clapped his hands over his ears as though that would keep it out, crouching on the ground, rocking backwards and forwards, moaning, the pain almost unendurable. It felt as though his mind was being taken over by several different minds. Thoughts that were not his own were crowding in on him.
