Aftermath

Rafe’s POV The door clicked shut behind her, leaving me alone in the dim light of my office. Papers were still scattered on the floor, the sharp scent of her perfume lingering in the air. I leaned back in my chair, dragging a hand over my face as if the motion could erase the memory of her—her flushed cheeks, the way her lips parted when I kissed her, the fire in her eyes when she challenged me, and the sound of her soft moans against my neck. What the hell just happened? I was a man known for my control. No matter the chaos surrounding me, I thrived on precision, order, and restraint. In my world, weakness was a liability I couldn’t afford. And yet, Lena had walked into my office and unraveled me with a few coy smiles and a touch too bold for her own good. I growled, the sound echoing in the empty room. My wolf stirred restlessly beneath the surface, his energy humming with something I hadn’t felt in years—desire, yes, but also something deeper. Something territorial. She’s ours, he growled, his voice a low rumble in my mind. “She’s trouble,” I muttered aloud, though the conviction in my words wavered. I couldn’t deny her beauty—that had been obvious from the moment I saw her. She had curves that begged to be touched, a confident stride that demanded attention. But it wasn’t just her appearance that had me tangled up in knots. It was the fire in her, the way she pushed back when most would cower. And then there was her scent, a heady mix of lavender and wild rain. It had clung to me like a second skin, stirring instincts I thought I’d buried long ago. She’s playing a game, I told myself, though the thought only deepened the scowl on my face. There was something about the way she’d looked at me tonight, a glint in her eyes that spoke of more than simple attraction. She had an agenda, and I wasn’t a fool—I knew better than to think her sudden interest in me was purely coincidental. Still, when she’d leaned in, her fingers brushing against my chest, I hadn’t stopped her. Hell, I’d pulled her closer, unable to resist the magnetic pull between us. I slammed my fist against the desk, the sharp sound cutting through the quiet. I didn’t lose control. Not for anyone. But Lena... she was different. “Rafe?” The knock on the door pulled me from my thoughts, and I straightened, my expression hardening as I called out, “What?” The door cracked open, and my Beta, Marcus, stepped inside. His sharp eyes scanned the room, lingering briefly on the papers scattered across the floor before meeting mine. “Everything all right?” he asked, his tone neutral but laced with curiosity. “Fine,” I said curtly, standing and beginning to gather the papers. Marcus raised an eyebrow but didn’t press. “Lena just walked out of here looking like she’d won the lottery,” he said instead, leaning casually against the doorframe. I froze for half a second before continuing to straighten the desk. “What of it?” “Just wondering what kind of business she had with you,” he said, his tone light but probing. “She had questions about her role in the pack,” I lied smoothly, though the memory of her body pressed against mine made my voice tighten. “Right,” Marcus drawled, clearly unconvinced. “Well, whatever it was, she seemed pretty pleased with herself.” I didn’t respond, and after a moment, Marcus sighed and straightened. “All right, I’ll leave you to it. But if you need anything—” “I won’t,” I cut him off, my tone sharper than I intended. Marcus gave me a long, assessing look before nodding and stepping out of the room. The door clicked shut behind him, leaving me alone once more. I sat heavily in my chair, my gaze fixed on the desk as I tried to untangle the mess of thoughts in my head. Lena had gotten under my skin, and I hated it. She was a distraction, a dangerous one at that. And yet, the memory of her lips on mine, the fire in her touch, lingered like a brand on my skin. She’s not just a distraction, my wolf growled. She’s ours. “No,” I said aloud, my voice firm. “She’s trouble.” But even as I said the words, I couldn’t help but wonder if it was already too late.
