CHAPTER THREE: FRACTURES IN TIME

EPISODE ONE — Echoes Beneath the Skin Morning arrived without permission. Jasmine woke with her name lodged in her chest, as though she had been calling herself from somewhere far away. The ceiling fan turned slowly above her, each rotation dragging time with it. For a long moment, she didn’t move. She listened. The house was quiet. Too quiet. Then she felt it. The object beneath her pillow pulsed faintly, warm against her cheek, like a hidden heart beating out of rhythm with her own. She sat up carefully and unwrapped it. The glow inside shifted, slow and deliberate, as if it had been awake long before she was. Something had followed her out of her dreams. By the time she reached school, the world felt thin—like a veil stretched too tight. Shadows lingered longer than they should. Sounds arrived before their source. When she reached for a spoon at breakfast, she knew it would slip from her fingers before it did. That frightened her more than the fall itself. In the school hallway, the echo became unbearable. Mid-step, the lockers around her flickered. Fresh paint peeled away to reveal older layers beneath. Voices overlapped—present laughter tangled with unfamiliar echoes. A banner appeared overhead, celebrating an event that hadn’t happened yet, stamped with a date that made her stomach drop. Her heart slammed. She blinked. The hallway snapped back into place. Students rushed past, unaware. Normal noise resumed. Except Daniel stood at the far end of the corridor, completely still. He wasn’t confused. He wasn’t afraid. He was watching her. When their eyes met, the pressure vanished instantly, like a held breath finally released. Jasmine swallowed hard. This wasn’t coincidence. Later that day, she found herself drawn toward the abandoned science block without knowing why. Daniel was already there, leaning against the wall as if he had been waiting for hours. “You felt it,” he said. Not a question. “The shifts will start small,” he continued. “Then they’ll test you.” “Test me for what?” “For control.” “And if I fail?” Daniel looked away. “Time pushes back.” The object warmed suddenly, reacting to his presence. “You can hear the echoes,” he said quietly. “That’s why it chose you.” The word chose settled heavily between them. EPISODE TWO — When the Future Touched Back That night, Jasmine didn’t mean to cross any line. She sat at her desk, the object resting openly before her, its glow stronger than ever. Patterns rippled beneath its surface like trapped light. The air thickened. Her room blurred at the edges. Cold rushed through her. Then she was no longer there. The school courtyard stretched before her—aged, cracked, abandoned. Weeds tore through concrete. The clock tower loomed overhead, frozen at a time she didn’t recognize. Wind howled through empty space. This wasn’t a dream. Footsteps echoed behind her—slow, deliberate. A shadow stretched across the ground, bending the light around it. Fear snapped her back. She collapsed onto her bedroom floor, gasping. The object dimmed instantly, as though retreating from its own power. She understood then: she hadn’t just seen the future. She had been there. The next day, Daniel looked wrong. Pale. Strained. Like something inside him had torn. “You crossed a boundary,” he said quietly. “I didn’t mean to,” Jasmine whispered. “That doesn’t matter.” They sat beneath the library tree, the air heavy with truths she didn’t want to hear. “Every pull creates strain,” Daniel said. “Not just on you.” “On who?” “Anchors.” The realization hit her hard. “You’re an anchor.” Daniel didn’t deny it. “Time needs me fixed to a specific outcome.” “And if I keep pulling?” “I fracture further.” Guilt burned through her chest. “I’ll stop.” Daniel met her eyes, sad and certain. “You won’t be able to.” EPISODE THREE — The World Begins to Notice Reality started slipping in small, terrifying ways. Moments repeated themselves. Sounds arrived before their source. Objects shifted when no one touched them. Then time froze. A pen slipped from Jasmine’s fingers in class—and hovered midair. The room fell silent, suspended in a single impossible second. Her skin burned as the object surged against her palm. Time snapped forward violently. The pen clattered to the floor. The classroom erupted into noise. No one noticed. Except Daniel. “They know now,” he said later, his voice tight. “You’re too loud.” “Who?” “The ones who clean up mistakes.” That evening, Daniel took her somewhere unfinished—between moments. Buildings faded in and out. Light bent without a source. The space felt wrong, like reality holding its breath. “This is where choices form,” Daniel said. “Before they harden into events.” “You brought me here to decide?” “Yes.” “Between what?” “Control—and loss.” Her chest tightened. “And you?” Daniel gave a small, resigned smile. “I’m the cost either way.” EPISODE FOUR — The Door That Shouldn’t Exist Jasmine didn’t make the choice. Time did. That night, the object activated on its own. Light tore through her room, carving a door where her wall had been. The echo roared back, louder than ever. On the other side stood Daniel. Older. Scarred. Worn down by years that hadn’t happened yet. “You waited too long,” the older Daniel said. “Now it’s awake.” Present Daniel appeared beside her, frozen in shock. The room trembled as timelines strained against one another. Jasmine stood between two futures, the object burning in her hands, fear and responsibility crashing together in her chest. Somewhere deep within time, something listened. And it was no longer patient.
