CHAPTER FIVE Emmeline made her way through the field, following the rows of corn eastward. The cornstalks rose high above her head though they offered little protection form the rapidly rising sun ahead of her. She trudged down the row, the plants rustling dryly as she passed. She could not help but marvel at them though. It seemed like no time at all since spring had first come, and she and her parents were rising in the still cool mornings to plow the fields. She and mother with Cheval, and father with Jacques, turning the rich soil to prepare it for these very plants. But how long ago did they plant this crop?
