Chapter Twenty-Two Joseph greeted Alfred at the doorstep to the Levy Building the following Wednesday with an apple in his hand and a sack at his feet. The street smelled of smokestacks and lumber, the start of the work day at the harbor. “No need to go up.” Joseph shouldered the sack, which clanked with the movement. “We’re heading out.” He gestured for Alfred to pick up another canvas sack that sat against the door. “Where are we going?” “To the west end to take observations.” “I don’t have a horse.” Alfred sat the sack at their feet when Joseph stopped next to a mare and began securing his sack on the saddle. “Isaac said you could ride Daisy.” He pointed to the alley between the buildings where a chestnut mare chewed on the grass along the bricks.
