What drew you to write a novel centered around the Great Storm of 1900?
When I first visited Galveston, I was immediately taken with how much history was preserved on the island. A walk down the Strand offers a stroll through the city’s Victorian heyday, not to mention the mansions that dot Broadway, and I soon found myself reading as many books I could on the city’s history. The Great Storm of 1900 was the island’s pivotal moment; it fell from prominence in a matter of hours, going from the Wall Street of the South to devastation overnight, and the significance of that image stuck with me.
