Chapter 14Every male high school student received military training. I received a uniform. The trousers sagged and the sleeves of the tunic almost covered my hands. The cap came down around my ears.
This made me think back to my military service after high school. In 1931, I was billeted in Cracow. I still remember it like it was yesterday.
“Pan Lieutenant. Pan Lieutenant?”
“Yes. What is it?” A hand shook my shoulder vigorously. I had been dozing in a comfortable wingback chair in the officer's mess. I blinked myself awake, ran a hand through my hair and tried to focus on the young cadet before me.
“Pan Captain Vishna wishes to see you right away.”
I stood up and straightened my uniform. “Thank you Corporal. I shall attend to the Captain presently.”
