Chapter 52Beulah had fallen asleep finally upstairs. I found the key to the cellar and unlocked the door, then clumped down the stairs. I switched on the bare light and picked my way through the lawn furniture, bookcases and ceiling tiles easing to the back where I'd built some shelves for my tools. There was a set of drawers and I pulled one of them out. I felt around for the gunnysack and placed it on the table. I reached inside and felt the well-oiled metal. I laid each piece out and then practiced assembling and re-assembling with my eyes closed as I'd done so many years ago. I'd kept half a dozen clips and over the years I'd checked each one to ensure the powder hadn't dried and everything remained in perfect working order. I'd done this without Esther's knowledge.
