“You think this is strange, Captain?” I looked at him, trying to focus on the too-narrow eyes. “No, it's fine. There'll be little time for dancing later. Dancing won't help defeat the Nazis.” “Perhaps not. But it's the spirit of the people that makes a difference, don't you think?” “You fought in '39?” Mischa nodded. “Yes. I was with Tadiz. We met them at the base of the Carpathians, then got pushed back all the way to Warsaw and farther. Most of my comrades were killed. I fled east toward the end of September. I have relatives who lived over the border. They got me across.” He lowered his voice. “It was touch and go with the Russians too. Several times, I was almost killed. But now I suppose, they need us and we have a common enemy. Besides, they'll need loyal Poles once this is over
