Brandon watched Scott’s face fall as the price soared out of whatever limit Scott’s publisher had set. He was oddly disappointed for his friend, although relieved that Scott hadn’t pressured him into giving up any more details. That wasn’t a conversation he wanted to have with his aunt. “I’ve got twenty-two hundred, twenty-two, anyone want to make it twenty-five?” Brandon scanned the crowd and spotted Catherine “Cappie” Lockwood, an old friend of his mom’s who frequently came to the auctions. Cappie ran an Etsy refurbish shop during the winter, and during tourist season sold “vintage” clothing and antiqued furniture.
