Chapter 6

1217 Words
During the time she waited for Elijah to decide whether he would search for the triplets, Grace stood outside the building, under the shade of a tree, while she observed the sparse movement of the city streets. Despite trying to escape the memories of the past, every stone in that place reminded her of the difficult moments she had lived there. Grace had flashes of her childhood, a few moments when she was happy while her parents were still alive. She still remembered the sweet scent that emanated from her mother’s long hair and her father’s deep voice. But after I killed them, her life became a blur, filled with scars, until Elijah came and saved her. She wondered what had happened to Uncle Boris. Whether he was still alive or had paid for all the evil, he had committed. Growing tired of waiting, she decided to investigate the surroundings of the pack on her own. someone had some information, even if it seemed unlikely. She was willing to take the risk. With every step she took on the streets, curious glances turned toward her. Whispers and mocking laughter arose. The pack hadn’t forgotten that Grace had fled because she had been rejected, and they still saw her as a despicable waste in their midst. Her steps led her to the old house where she had lived with her parents. It appeared to be abandoned. A wave of negative emotions washed over her. She walked beneath the porch, down a long corridor. The decaying wood sank in some spots, but that wasn’t what caught Grace’s attention. There was an old toy lying on the floor. She felt a sudden desire to pick it up, but decided against it. The sound of branches breaking startled her. With her heightened senses, she surveyed the surroundings, and all she could see was a bird flying out of the woods in a different direction. That house had been abandoned for many years since her parents died, and no one dared to live there. They said the house carried a curse, and the screams of the previous owners still echoed through the empty rooms. Grace turned her attention back to the place. There were several doors along the cracked walls. She continued walking until she finally reached another massive door that was open. When she entered, she had the feeling of being watched. The place smelled foul, but the memories imprinted in every corner almost made Grace cry. The house was isolated, far from the city, and rarely did anyone approach it. Lost in her memories, she sensed someone approaching, and as she was ready to escape, a hand grabbed her. The need to free herself exploded in Grace’s chest. She thought about screaming, but as if the intruder could read her thoughts, he turned her around to face him and said, “I’m not here to harm you, Grace. I want to talk.” They released her arms, moving backward, revealing even more of her muscles. He wore a black t-shirt, and his golden hair reflected in the sunlight. Grace had never seen that man in her entire life. When she looked into his eyes, she felt fear. What if he was the kidnapper of the triplets and was there to take her? She took a step back, then another, when she found herself cornered. “Who are you?” her trembling voice came out as a whisper. “You don’t need to be afraid, Grace,” he took a step forward, and Grace recoiled, “My name is Xander, and I’m not part of this pack.” Despite the terror that dominated her, Grace couldn’t help but notice the charming features of the man standing in front of her. He had the brightest blue eyes she had ever seen. His face was defined with a stubble that matched his hair. “How do you know who I am?” Grace asked, this time in a louder tone. “The rumors of you searching for your kidn*pped children have reached the northern side,” he pointed in that direction, but Grace didn’t divert her gaze from his. “News spreads when it concerns the kidn*pped children of Alpha Elijah.” Grace found it very strange. Her eyebrows arched, indicating her skepticism. “And why are you after me?” She swallowed the saliva that had accumulated in her mouth before continuing. “I thought about talking to the Alpha, but he wouldn’t pay attention to me.” the confusion on Grace’s face grew. “How would he give credibility to a stranger?” “And what makes you think I would?” Xander looked deep into her eyes, sending shivers down Grace’s spine. Then he averted his gaze to the woods next to the house, let out a long sigh, and continued. “Because I have information about the whereabouts of the triplets that will interest you.” Grace’s heart skipped a thousand beats. Her eyes trembled. Her mouth dried up. She analyzed Xander, trying to find any trace that he was telling the truth. A long silence lingered between them. Grace’s thoughts wandered, causing her to question whether she should believe the words of this man or not. What would he gain by offering such important information? What were his true intentions? “How am I supposed to know you’re telling the truth?” Her body stirred as she felt she was on the verge of discovering the whereabouts of her children. “You’ll have to trust me.” It was a risky game to trust someone she didn’t know. Grace would need more evidence that Xander was telling the truth. It could be a trap set by the kidnappers themselves to capture her as well. “They killed your friend because they believed she was you,” he continued, nonchalant, while picking at his teeth with a thin twig from a plant. “Who killed her?” Her voice grew heavy, and her expression hardened. Just as Xander was about to reveal the answer, a shadow appeared right behind him. Elijah stood at the end of the corridor, his eyes blazing, and everything seemed to move in slow motion. Before Xander could turn to see who, it was, Elijah rushed forward, grabbing his neck and pinning him against the wall. On the other side, Grace stifled a scream. “Who are you?” Elijah had a demonic look on his face. “He’s an informant.” Grace touched Elijah’s hand, urging him to release his grip on Xander’s neck. “He knows the whereabouts of the triplets.” It took Elijah a while to understand what Grace was saying, and he continued to hold on to Xander’s neck. “At least listen to what he has to say,” Grace pleaded, her voice choked with emotion. Grace watched the scene filled with fear as Elijah stepped back, never taking his eyes off Xander. After a few seconds, he looked at her, still furious. “I will hear what he has to say,” he leaned his face closer to hers and whispered, “but you shouldn’t trust a stranger so much, little wolf.” While Xander caught his breath, Elijah grabbed Grace’s arm and dragged her away from there.
