~~Tobias POV~~
I woke up to the sound of her voice mumbling in her sleep, she was speaking a language that I didn't expect for her to; Latin. I moved from the comfortable spot on the floor to kneel beside the girl, her scent swirling around me achingly. Dread settled in the pit of my stomach as I glanced at my watch. It was midnight. I knew what was happening now. Fear thrills through my veins even as Elias starts howling in delight. Almost 150 years. It has been almost 150 years and yet…
I had to be sure, though I knew once I touched her it would be game over for me. Gently, I reached out and stroked her arm with my finger tips, tears springing up and pouring down my cheeks as sparks bloomed up my fingers and longing tugged at my soul.
"Not again… Elias I can't…" my voice was quiet, almost a sob. Eli whimpered softly in my mind as memories pooled like tar in my mind, sticky and difficult to get through. Image after image flashes through my mind of Liza. Her beautiful blonde hair, silver-blue eyes. Her smile, her lullaby. Every day I spent with her had been bliss… until the townsfolk found us.
I shook off the memories and realized while I had been stuck in the past, Eli had taken over and had her hand in mine, my other hand stroking her arm lovingly. Tingles radiated up my arms, sending my heart into a sprint. No one but Liza had sent my heart fluttering in my chest before, until now. This girl seemed to bring a part of me I had thought long dead back to life.
A soft groan brought my attention back outward, and the girl's eyes fluttered open. Silver eyes look into mine, and I can't help the soft gasp that escapes me. I had never seen such a color naturally, even Liza's eyes had been more light blue than silver. Her eyes were framed by thick lashes, and her small nose twitched slightly as she took in the scents around her. Her full lips were pink, letting me know the blood loss was no longer an issue. Auburn hair fell in soft waves around her head and looked to be about shoulder length. How is it that I never noticed how absolutely stunning she was? Possibly because I had feared she wouldn't wake up, but now there was nothing to distract me from her perfection.
After what felt like several moments, she cleared her throat and smiled. Her smile made my heart skip a beat and I blinked rapidly in stunned silence. I suddenly feel stupid and tongue tied, though I had never been so stuck before. A small smile graced My lips before I saw her move to sit up. Gently, as though she may break, I slid one arm under her shoulders and supported her as she sat up, the tingles spreading delightfully along my body and causing a sudden ache within me. I can feel her heart hammering against my arm, which doesn't help things.
Once she sits up and takes a look around, her silver eyes meet mine once more and she smiles softly. That one look, that one smile, and suddenly I can't breathe. I knew I would do anything for this woman, live, die, kill, anything.
~~Alexis POV~~
I woke up in confusion, the sound of contented grumbling purring through my head. My eyes won't obey me when I tell them to open, but a delightful sensation was traveling up my arm, highlighted by the sounds in my mind. A delicious smell of bananas and mint bathed my tongue and I breathed in deeply. The noise in my mind increased as I realized someone was holding my hand. I forced my eyes open to meet the sapphire blue gaze of whoever was sitting beside me and it feels as if the whole world stops for a brief moment. The beautiful pools of liquid blue gazed at me with anguish and secrets buried deep and I had a desire to hold him close and protect him from more pain.
I shook off the urge and tried to sit up in the surprisingly comfortable bed I'd found myself in. I gasped as pain and stiffness clung to my body, around my leg and wrist, mostly. When he saw me wince, the man moved to support me. Suddenly my body seemed to be set ablaze by the surge of electricity that flowed through me at his touch. The tingles made goosebumps rise on my arms, though I ignored them. With a quick look around to distract myself, I focus my mind and look back at the handsome man before me. He looked to be between 20 and 23, his jaw had the beginning of a beard and his lips were full for a man. The small scar right above his top lip was barely noticeable, if I hadn't been so close to him I may not have noticed it. his nose was slightly crooked as if it had been broken once and never set to heal, or it had been broken so many times it was impossible to set right. Either way, it gave him a rugged look and made him even more attractive in my eyes. My eyes finally met his once again and I smiled sweetly, wondering if I should say something or do something. An intense pull was making me want to pull him closer, though I resisted for the moment.
"Mate." A voice whispered in my head, and I felt my breath catch. A mate? For me? Wait… what was that in my head? A voice? Did I finally get my wolf?? I was suddenly overjoyed, but terrified at the same time. If I had my wolf, and I was officially 18, that meant I could fall to the madness that rogue wolves experienced. I suppressed a shiver of fear and looked back into my mate's eyes. What would I tell him? That we just found each other and now I'm doomed to be a mad rogue the rest of my life?
My panic was cut short by a soft buzzing sound and my attention snaps to a phone sitting not too far away. I glance back at the man and raise one eyebrow. He flashes a dazzling smile before picking up the phone and pressing it to his ear silently. The whole time he holds the phone to his ear, he never breaks eye contact. Not that I want him to, of course. Finally he hangs up and stands up, offering his hand.
"Are you hungry?" His voice was deep and rumbled in his chest. My heart skipped a beat before picking up double time and I felt a sudden rush of desire. Never in my life had I thought I would be turned on by someone's voice, let alone by such a simple question. I licked my lips and nodded, noticing his eyes flash gold for a moment before he blinked, and they were back to their original color. It was so swift it made me wonder if I had imagined it or not.
I nodded and he arranged the pillows around me to help me sit up comfortably before he went to the door and brought out a tray that was sitting beside it. Pancakes and eggs made my mouth water and I took a drink of the cold glass of orange juice he offered from the tray.
"When did you have time to do this?" I asked between mouthfuls of delicious food. I hadn't seen the tray there before, so where did it come from? From the scent, he hadn't left my side in a while.
"I… um… I am just a little gifted." He chuckles and flashes a smile that makes my heart skip a beat. I swear, this man was going to be the death of me, and I barely knew him. I finished my meal before flexing all my muscles. Nothing seemed out of place, but I could tell I had some broken bones at some point. My muscles were sore around my thigh and I remembered my wrist snapping in the crash- the crash!!
I move the tray off my lap almost frantically and throw the blankets aside. My body ached but it had healed significantly, my bones no longer broken. I wondered how long it had been since the crash, and what had happened. In desperation, I turned to my mate; who had stood up in surprise and worry when I did.
"The bus! What happened? Is everyone ok? Please tell me they made it out!" I was shaking, fear spreading through me for the other people on the bus. He closed his eyes and shook his head in reverence, making my heart drop. I did not know those people, the bus driver at all, and only the other passenger's face from the orphanage, but their dying tore into me more than I expected. How bad was the crash?
"You were the only survivor, I'm afraid. It was lucky I was able to get you out at all, love. By the way, my name is Tobias. People around here know me as James, but you are my mate so you can call me by my true name." He smirks playfully, his blue eyes had a gentle look to them and I suspected they didn't usually. The way he spoke gave me the impression of an old soul in a young body. I blushed as I realized I hadn't even told him my own name.
"Jeeze, I'm sorry. My name is Alexis, but you can call me Alex or Lexi or even just Lex. Not many people stick to just one name with me, so I don't mind anything." I realize I'm rambling and i mentally shake myself. My heart was beating hard against my ribs and I felt as if I would fall over at any time. My mate snaps his fingers, as if remembering something, before he reaches for something at the foot of the bed. Hidden from my view by the corner of the mattress, he pulls out my bag that I had brought with me from the orphanage. I sigh softly in relief when I see the familiar old thing. At least I still had all my government information.
I accept the offered bag and smile sweetly to my mate, ignoring the guilt and grief that still seemed to tug at me. I had no reason to feel guilty about surviving, and honestly it seemed a miracle that I even survived. So for now, I'm going to enjoy being with my mate until the madness takes me. I sit on the bed and unzip the bag, pulling out a very old and tattered bunny rabbit. It was the last thing I had of my parents, my mother giving it to me before I ended up at the orphanage. I hugged it closely and ignored the scratchy feel of its stiff fur, breathing in the scent that always calmed me. My mate sat beside me and put his arm around me. With a far off look on his beautiful face, he says softly; "I gave them an honored burial. The driver and the other passenger were wolves, both belonging somewhere and to someone else. I hope the Goddess welcomes them kindly."
The mention of the Goddess stirred something in me, as if my wolf was responding to the topic eagerly. Suddenly a flash of a loving face went through my mind and I couldn't help the shiver that went through me. I had a sudden and powerful feeling that more happened than I seem to realize. I moved closer to my mate, pressing into his warm body and enjoying the feeling of being close like this. What had happened, I wondered? Was it more than just me being out of it from the crash? I shrugged off the unnerving feeling, hoping it wasn't madness settling in already before I spoke again.
"So, you're a wolf? What pack are you from?" My question was innocent, but he suddenly winced as if I had asked him something difficult. "Are you a rogue, then?" I was suddenly relieved and saddened at the same time. If I were to go mad, at least I didn't have to do it alone.
"That, my dear, is a very… complex question." He sighed and ran his free hand through his hair, tussling it adorably. I couldn't help the smile that curved my lips, though I paid careful attention and waited eagerly for him to go on. With a deep sigh, he turned to face me, the absence of his warmth making me feel chilled. He looked into my eyes and I was suddenly captured by his intense stare.
"Alexis, what I am about to tell you may not sound true, but it is completely. You may think me mad, but I am only being honest." His words made my stomach drop. Has he gone mad already? He didn't seem feral, or unusual in the least. Mad wolves can't even hold conversations, so I give him the benefit of the doubt. He sighs before continuing; "I have been alive for a long time, Alexis. I don't remember where I came from, or who my parents are. I have vague memories of my mother, but her face has vanished from my memories. The truth is, Alexis, I am well over 150 years old."
