Chapter 12

Breath Neva, breath, I told myself. I needed to psych myself up for the long awaited Math test that Professor Burns had promised. You got this. You have studied and prepared adequately for it. After Aydan had taken me to my room, I immediately fell asleep and that was the first time that I actually got any sleep the entire week.  I took one last deep breath to mentally prepare myself for what Professor Burns had in store for us. "I'm going to fail," Alex wailed from beside me. "I haven't studied enough and I just know that man is going to bring something that I haven't studied." Chance chuckled from my other side. "Aren't we all," he said and then laughed some more. "I mean, I did study but I know I'm still going fail. That's just a known fact," he laughed and then shrugged as if it was no big deal. Alex turned to me and his face almost made me burst into laughter. He looked like he was really going to cry and that seemed to cheer me up for some reason. "You are ready right?" he asked me. His voice now sounded hoarse and he coughed to clear it. "Everyone knows that you got this and you are sure to pass." If only I was as confident in myself as they all were. I hadn't studied Math since Saturday when Aydan finally decided to grace me with his presence and actually helped me go through some basic concepts that I had long since forgotten. "Why are you even asking her?" Chance raised his eyebrow at Alex. "We all know what she is going to say." "I know," Alex said sadly. "What do you mean?" I asked. "What am I going to say?" I was now curious of what it was that I was no doubt going to say when they asked. Alex and Chance a look before they turned to me with scowls on their faces.  "Seriously? You are going to ask us that," Chance said as his eyebrows furrowed and his scowl deepened. "You know asking that question kind of makes you and Emmanuel the same?" My mouth opened and a few times but no words came out. I did not know what to say to that. What does one say when you are being called out for something that you hardly know? "Every time someone asks you if you already and prepared for a test or exam, your answer is always the same," Chance went on explaining. "'I'm going to fail you guys', that is what you always say and when the results come out, you are one of the top students who actually passed." Wow, okay. I had no idea that was how people saw me. However, it was not as though I was lying to them. I always thought I never studied enough and knew I was going to fail. "Give her a break man," Alex said in my defense. "Obviously, she doesn't know she is that good at anything." Chance scoffed, "Please! Everyone knows what they are. Those who claim they don't are just in denial and are low-key feeling themselves." I wanted to say something in response but my phone beeped. I searched my around my bag while Chance and Alex argued about being smart and selfish. I grabbed my phone and I was surprised to find a text from Aydan. Never did I think that he had saved my number so for him to text me and wish me luck on my test was beyond my comprehension. Chance snapped his fingers in front of my face and I snapped out of my thoughts about Aydan.  "Were you even listening to anything we have been saying?" Chance asked. "Because it seems to me like you are busy with your face. Whatever it is must be really good because you are smiling like crazy. Show us." He tried to pry my phone out of my hand just as Professor Burns walked in. I smiled in triumph when Chance sat back down and narrowed his eyes at me. "You got saved this time. But trust me, I will see what made you smile like a Cheshire cat," Chance whispered.                                                                                 ********** "I hate Professor Burns," Alex said with a sigh as we walked out of Professor Burns' class. "Why did he have to bring such questions?" I chuckled under my breath while Chance nodded his head in agreement.  "That was hard man," Chance raked a hand through his hair and sighed. "Everything I studied did not even come. This sucks." Alex and Chance turned to me when I did not say anything in response. "See, I told you she would ace the damn test and she was complaining with the rest of us," Chance said with the shake of the head. "She has obviously passed." Alex sighed. "Let her talk for herself. Stop saying stuff on her behalf." Then he turned to me and tilted his head to the side. "Did you pass?" "It was actually simple," I replied with a shrug and it was. The test was actually quite simple. Chance arched his eyebrow at me at that. "You mean to tell me that you, Neva Summers, found that ridiculously hard Math test simple?"  "Yeah, I mean it was not all that bad," I shrugged. "It was just basic knowledge some of the questions that he brought. If you actually did go through the material then you would be saying the exact same thing that i am saying." Alex and Chance stopped walking and I stopped walking as well. I turned back to look at them and the expressions on their faces was priceless. It was a combination of many emotions but I could only decipher shock, surprise, anger and envy, all of which I had no idea how to respond to. "Okay wow," Alex said as he finally seemed to snap out of whatever trance he had been in momentarily. "Wow, that's all I can say." "I have nothing, really shocked as hell here," Chance said. "How? I just can't believe it even though you just confirmed it." I took another deep breath and then chuckled, this was kind of fun and it was all thanks to Faith and her mean self. I had to thank her the next time I saw her. "Aydan helped me revise some of the things on Saturday and I was able to recall them all. Really, it's not a big deal." Chance narrowed his eyes into slits at me. "Speak for yourself, the rest of us have failed." I chuckled and we resumed walking to our next class. "I can't believe Aydan actually tutored you. I mean, whenever I ask for his help he always tells me he is busy or some lame arse excuse," Chance said with a sigh. "Other times he would just downright say no, which sucks as hell." "And he did it for free," I said with a smug smile. "f**k, this is so unfair," Chance cursed, "Why do you get to have all the good luck and not any of us?" Alex sighed loudly. "Life ins't fair man, get used to it."
