"Wow." Alex’s voice was quiet, almost like she was speaking more to herself than to him. Nikolai exhaled, rubbing the back of his neck. Yeah, wow. They were still sitting close—so close that their knees touched, their hands still intertwined. He should have let go by now. But he didn’t. Neither did she. He didn’t know what to do with that. Alex turned her head slightly to look at him, her gaze thoughtful. “We have one week to get this right.” Nikolai frowned. “No, we don’t.” Her eyebrows pulled together. “What?” He gave her a small, easy shrug, forcing a smile. “Look at how far we’ve come already. There’s no point in pressuring ourselves. We’re not actors, Alex. If we try too hard, it’s just going to look fake.” Alex’s frown deepened. “That’s... new.” “What is?” “That tactic.”
