CHAPTER TWO
"The Moon Goddess speaks in silence long before she speaks in fate. Only those chosen by destiny hear the difference."
Auren's heart refused to slow.
It pounded against her ribs with such force that she was certain Elara and Mira could hear it.
The vision was gone.
The whisper had faded.
Yet the uneasiness lingered, wrapping around her like invisible chains.
Three wolves.
Three pairs of golden eyes.
One reached for her.
One stood upon a throne.
One knelt before a lonely grave.
For eight years, the dream had haunted every full moon.
Tonight...
It had never felt more real.
"Auren."
Elara's voice was barely above a whisper.
She was still holding Auren's shoulders, her usual playful expression replaced by genuine concern.
"You scared us."
Auren blinked, forcing herself back to the present.
The sacred clearing slowly came into focus.
The bonfires.
The towering silver oaks.
The hundreds of wolves gathered beneath the moonlight.
Everything looked exactly as it had only moments before.
Everything except her.
"I'm sorry," she murmured.
"It was just... a headache."
Mira studied her carefully.
"You've never looked at the moon like that before."
Auren swallowed.
"What do you mean?"
"You looked..."
Mira searched for the right words.
"...like you recognized something."
Before Auren could answer, Elara gently nudged her shoulder.
"If tonight is making you nervous, you're allowed to admit it."
"I'm not nervous."
Elara raised an eyebrow.
"No?"
"You've barely smiled since we arrived."
"You've squeezed that poor pendant so much it probably wishes it belonged to someone else."
Despite herself, Auren laughed softly.
"You always find a way to be dramatic."
"It's a gift."
"It really isn't."
"It absolutely is."
The brief laughter eased the tension between them.
Only for a moment.
Because the weight inside Auren's chest refused to disappear.
Instead...
It grew heavier.
Almost instinctively, her fingers drifted back to the moonstone pendant resting against her neck.
The smooth silver stone felt strangely warm.
She frowned.
That wasn't possible.
It had always been cold beneath her fingertips.
Always.
Yet now...
It pulsed gently against her skin.
Like a heartbeat.
Auren quickly pulled her hand away.
"Is something wrong?"
Mira asked.
"No."
The answer came too quickly.
She looked back at the pendant.
The warmth had vanished.
Perhaps...
She really was imagining things.
A loud laugh echoed nearby.
Several young wolves raced across the clearing, weaving between families while older warriors called after them with amused smiles.
Near the altar, healers carefully arranged fresh moon lilies around the sacred basin filled with shimmering moonwater.
The scent of crushed silver herbs drifted through the evening air.
Everything about the sanctuary radiated peace.
It should have calmed her.
Instead...
It made her feel even more out of place.
As though every wolf around her belonged beneath this moon.
Everyone except her.
"Auren."
She turned toward the familiar voice.
Her mother approached with graceful steps, her silver ceremonial gown catching the moonlight as though woven from starlight itself.
Liora Vale smiled warmly.
"There you are."
"I've been looking everywhere."
Auren returned the smile.
"I didn't go far."
"No."
Liora reached out, gently brushing a loose strand of dark hair behind her daughter's ear.
"But your mind certainly did."
Auren lowered her eyes.
"You noticed?"
"A mother notices everything."
Before Auren could respond, another figure joined them.
Gareth Vale.
Unlike the warriors surrounding the sanctuary, Gareth carried no weapons.
Victories in battle had never measured his strength.
He was Blackwood Pack's most respected healer.
A wolf whose steady hands had delivered countless pups into the world... and saved countless lives from leaving it too soon.
He rested a reassuring hand on Auren's shoulder.
"You've been quiet all evening."
"I'm alright."
Gareth smiled knowingly.
"When you were little, you used to say those exact words whenever you'd climbed somewhere you weren't supposed to."
Elara covered her mouth to hide a laugh.
"I remember that."
"You fell out of Elder Rowan's apple tree."
"I was eight."
"You insisted the tree attacked you."
"It did."
Mira chuckled softly.
"It was definitely the tree."
Even Gareth laughed.
For a brief moment, Auren forgot the fear clawing at her chest.
She forgot the whisper.
She forgot the dream.
She was...
Home.
Safe.
Loved.
Liora gently took both of Auren's hands.
"No matter what happens tonight..."
"You are already enough."
Auren looked into her mother's gentle eyes.
"What if..."
She hesitated.
"What if something goes wrong?"
Liora's expression softened.
"The Moon Goddess has guided our people for generations."
"Trust her."
The words settled heavily inside Auren.
Trust her.
She wanted to.
She truly did.
But why...
Why had the voice begged her to run?
Before another thought could form, the deep blast of a ceremonial horn rolled across the sanctuary.
Once.
Then again.
And a third time.
The joyful conversations faded into silence.
Children hurried back to their families.
Warriors straightened their posture.
Every wolf turned toward the ancient Moon Altar.
Even the wind seemed to still beneath the silver glow of the full moon.
Slowly...
Elder Orien emerged from the stone pathway leading to the altar.
His silver robes flowed behind him, brushing softly against the ancient steps as he climbed toward the sacred platform.
Though age had bent his shoulders and silvered his hair, every movement carried quiet dignity.
This was not merely an elder.
This was the guardian of Blackwood's oldest traditions.
The keeper of the Moon Goddess' sacred rites.
He reached the altar.
Then slowly raised his ancient staff toward the heavens.
The crystal embedded at its peak caught the moonlight, sending ribbons of silver dancing across the silent clearing.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
Auren realized...
Even her own breathing had stopped.
Elder Orien's voice finally broke the silence.
"My children..."
The words echoed through the sanctuary like a prayer.
"Tonight..."
"We stand beneath the same moon that watched over our ancestors."
"The same moon that blessed the First Alpha..."
"And the same moon that has never failed to reveal the truth hidden within every wolf's soul."
He paused.
His aged eyes swept across every young wolf waiting before him.
Then...
For the briefest moment...
His gaze rested on Auren.
A strange feeling settled over her.
Not recognition.
Not kindness.
Something else.
Something she couldn't explain.
Elder Orien tightened his grip on his staff.
His voice grew deeper.
"The Awakening Ceremony..."
He lifted the staff high into the moonlight.
"...shall now begin."
