The night enveloped the forest in a shroud of darkness, broken only by the occasional flash of lightning that illuminated the gnarled branches and tangled undergrowth. Rain pelted down relentlessly, adding to the girl's sense of urgency as she ran. Her breath came in ragged gasps, her heart pounding so loudly in her chest that she could hear it over the howling wind.
Every step she took seemed to echo through the woods, amplifying her fear. She stumbled over roots and fallen branches, but she dared not stop. She knew that whatever was pursuing her was close behind, its heavy footsteps reverberating through the air like thunder.
