Chapter 3

644 Words
Audrey's POV: The divorce agreement came through quickly, so I took it to Julian. But I was stopped outside his company. "Ma'am, I'm sorry, but you can't go in without an appointment." Julian and I had kept our marriage a secret. After my mother passed away, I inherited her estate and used it to help Julian build his company from the ground up. But he told me that, for the sake of his image as a CEO, he didn't want anyone knowing he had built his company with his wife's money. He begged me to keep our marriage private. And what did I get in return? A company that had only survived because of me, while no one even knew who I was. Just then, Chloe walked straight through the entrance, dressed to perfection with a Chanel bag on her arm. She used facial recognition to enter Julian's private elevator. The receptionist immediately leaned toward me, practically bursting with gossip. "See that woman who just went in? I heard she's our CEO's wife. She and Mr. Hayes are childhood sweethearts. They've known each other since they were little. Once, there was a huge storm, and Mr. Hayes even abandoned a multimillion-dollar project just to go pick her up. Don't you think they make such a perfect couple?" I watched Chloe disappear into the elevator and remembered that day. I'd had a fever of 103.1°F and begged Julian to stay with me. He had merely said, "Work can't wait. I'll be back to take care of you." But he never came back. My fever eventually turned into acute pneumonia. I spent an entire month in the hospital, completely alone. I contacted Julian's assistant and had him take me upstairs. When I reached Julian's office, Chloe was eating durian. The unmistakable smell filled the entire room. Julian hated the smell of durian. Once, I bought one home, and he nearly replaced every piece of furniture in the house because of the smell. So whenever I craved it, I would secretly eat it outside before going home. Seeing how willingly he tolerated Chloe made me realize once again that he simply didn't love me. I took a deep breath, my fingers tightening around the corner of the divorce agreement. At least soon, none of this would have anything to do with me anymore. "You said Chloe broke my mother's necklace and would compensate me for it. I've picked out a high-end jewelry set. Sign the purchase agreement, and I won't pursue the matter any further." Hearing that, Chloe leaned over to take a look and sneered. "Seriously, Audrey? What kind of taste is this? Why would you buy something so old-fashioned? Even my mom wouldn't wear it." She pulled a gemstone necklace out from beneath her collar and showed it off. "Julian gave me this because I've been working so hard. It's much prettier than the one you picked." Julian looked pleased. Without even looking at the agreement, he signed it. Then he casually pushed it toward me and turned to Chloe with an indulgent smile. "Jewelry doesn't have to be pretty to be worth collecting. You're still young. I'll teach you about it little by little." The two of them flirted openly, as if I weren't even there. If this had happened before, I would have made a scene. But now, I simply grabbed the signed agreement and left. It was the ticket to freedom for me and my child. Just then, an email from the overseas headquarters landed in my inbox. HR: Hello, Audrey Bennett. Congratulations! Your overseas transfer request has been approved. A flight to London has been booked for you three days from now. We look forward to welcoming you to your new position. The divorce process would also be finalized in three days. 'Julian, I'm finally leaving you for good.'
