Two years passed in the blink of an eye.
"Zina, come to a party with me tonight, will you?"
When Elaine invited me, I happily agreed.
She showed up in a sharply tailored suit that made her look effortlessly cool.
She took me to the dressing room, where rows of gorgeous evening gowns were waiting for me to choose from.
"I'll take this one."
I pointed to a backless mermaid gown that shimmered with an elegant pearlescent sheen.
Once our hair and makeup were done, we headed into the main ballroom.

"That man's been staring at you for quite a while," Elaine murmured, quietly enough that only I could hear.
I took a sip of my wine.
