I stare at the wood for a long second then lean forward carefully and press one ear against it.
Silence.
I wait and wait and wait.
Nothing.
Very slowly, I open my door just enough to peek outside.
The hallway is empty.
I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding.
Okay. Good.
Carefully, I step out. And just as carefully, I ease my own door shut behind me, making sure it doesn't click too loudly.
The corridor stays silent and a tiny smile almost appears.
Maybe today isn't completely cursed after all.
Keeping my movements quiet for absolutely no logical reason, I turn toward the staircase and begin making my way downstairs.
I pass the spiral staircase slowly before making my way into the main lounge.
The entire place is quiet and empty.
