Morning sunlight leaked through the blinds of the safe house, casting soft golden stripes across Eliana's face.
But she wasn't asleep. She hadn't slept all night.
Her mind ran in endless loops—Marcus's smirk, Damian's broken face, the flash drive in Tunji's hand.
They had won a battle.
But not the war.
Across the room, Damian lay on the couch, his arm in a makeshift sling, ribs wrapped, lips swollen.
Eliana moved to sit by him, brushing his messy curls from his face.
"You didn't have to trade yourself for me," he whispered.
"I did," she replied. "Because you would've done the same."
He gave her a tired smile.
"That's the problem."
A knock came at the door.
Tunji froze.
Didi reached for her bag, where a small pistol was hidden.
Another knock. Firmer this time.
Eliana peered through the peephole and frowned.
"It's Sofia."
Sofia?
Her old roommate. The one who vanished after the scandal. Eliana hadn't seen her in nearly a year.
She opened the door cautiously.
Sofia looked different—leaner, sharper. Her clothes were expensive. Her smile was warm, but her eyes were cold.
"Eliana," she said, hugging her stiffly. "I heard you were in trouble."
"How did you find me?"
Sofia shrugged.
"Friends in tech. Word travels fast."
Inside, everyone exchanged nervous glances.
"I brought help," Sofia continued. "Legal aid, a place to stay. We know about Marcus. We've been building a case for months."
Eliana narrowed her eyes.
"Who's 'we'?"
Sofia paused.
"A group of reformers. Investors. People who've been wronged by men like him."
She passed Eliana a small envelope.
Inside: a keycard, a bank transfer slip, and a burner phone.
"You've made enemies," Sofia said softly. "But you've also made allies."
Tunji snorted.
"And we're just supposed to trust you?"
Sofia smirked.
"You don't have a choice."
⸻
That night, Eliana stood alone on the balcony of the new apartment Sofia had secured.
Everything felt too... convenient.
She dialed the burner phone.
No answer.
She tried again.
On the third ring, a deep voice answered.
"Eliana."
"Who is this?" she demanded.
"You've stirred waters that shouldn't be touched."
Her stomach dropped.
"Who are you?"
"You're in the middle of something much larger than Marcus," the voice said calmly. "And your new friend—Sofia—is not who you think."
Click.
Eliana stood frozen, the city lights spinning below her.
She turned, walked into the room—and found Sofia's bag sitting on the table. Unzipped.
Inside: a photo of Damian.
A thumb drive.
And a badge.
Government seal.
The initials: I.D.A.
International Defense Agency.
She wasn't just an old friend.
She was an agent.
