CHAPTER 19: AFTER THE FIRE

330 Words
By morning, Marcus Dane was dead, and his estate was in flames. Eliana didn't look back as the fire consumed the West Tower. She watched the smoke curl into the sky and whispered, "You won't hurt anyone else." The team disappeared before emergency responders arrived. Their escape was silent, precise — the work of people who had nothing left to fear. ⸻ The news broke hours later: "BREAKING: Business tycoon Marcus Dane found dead in suspected arson attack. Corruption files leaked globally. Dozens of arrests underway." The dominoes fell fast. Sofia Callen was detained by international agents after an anonymous tip. Several top government officials resigned. Protesters filled the streets across cities. Eliana's files had caused a global political quake. But in the quiet warehouse, the team sat with bruised bodies and heavier hearts. Damian pressed an ice pack to Eliana's shoulder. "You okay?" he asked. "No," she said. "But I will be." They stared at each other. So much unsaid. So much that had changed. "You saved my life," she whispered. "And you gave me a reason to live again," he replied. Their lips met — not rushed, not frantic — but with the weight of everything they'd lost and everything they might still find. Tunji coughed. "Not to ruin the mood, but we just made history. Should we... celebrate?" Didi chuckled, tears in her eyes. "Let's just live through the night first." ⸻ That night, Eliana sat on the rooftop under a bruised sky. Damian joined her, two mugs of coffee in hand. "What happens now?" she asked. He shrugged. "We live. Quietly, maybe. Or not. Your choice." "You think they'll let us go?" "They don't have a choice." She leaned on his shoulder. "I never thought I'd survive this." "You didn't just survive," he said. "You tore the truth wide open." And for the first time in months, Eliana smiled. Not because the world was perfect. But because she had won. And because he was still here.
