Chapter 4

1019 Words
Verity POV "How the hell do you know my name?" I growled, getting defensive and scared. I was in a strange place where I knew no one, yet this stranger just said my name. "Hey, hey, relax. It's your name tag, you're wearing a name tag." "Oh," I sighed, relieved, "yeah. Sorry about that." "It's fine. I'm a stranger. But I can change that. Name's Harry, would you care to dance or just sway?" he asked, extending his hand. I nodded, grateful for the diversion. We moved together on the makeshift dance floor. For a moment, I forgot about the rejection, about Leon and Jessica, about the pain that had driven me here. The night wasn't what I expected but it wasn't going bad. It was all about Harry. I excused myself to use the bathroom and I had no idea he followed me. He was waiting right outside one of the stalls and when I stepped out, he led me to the bathroom sink where he raised my dress. I didn't resist mostly because of the alcohol in my brain. I leaned forward and kissed him. "Make me yours," I whispered. He lifted me and pressed me against the mirror, his mouth roaming every inch of my body. I felt alive, more than I ever had. My legs quivered with want, I wanted to feel desired like someone in the world was interested in me. He slipped inside me, I bit my lower lip to hold back a scream. He thrusted and I wrapped around him. I felt on top of the world for the very first time. When I arrived home, Killian was waiting, and he was angry "Where were you?" he demanded. I ignored him and made my way into the house. He drew me back and slapped me, the force of it making me stumble. "Answer me when I talk to you! You looked like a mess at the ceremony. Do you know what you've done? You're downgrading the entire family with your disgraceful behavior." I tasted metal on my lips…blood. "You're the one who made me a waitress for the ceremony," I retorted, my voice hoarse. He slapped me again, and the sting intensified. "Are you trying to say it's my fault? Is that what you're implying? It's my fault that Leon saw you for what you are?" I shook my head, trying to shake off Leon's words in my head and think only of Harry. Lyra walked in and for the first time, she looked concerned. "That's enough, Killian. Verity, go to your room." Alone in my room, I could hear yells from the kitchen. Killian was no doubt going to deal with me the next day. My cut lip healed faster than it normally should. I guess that's what happens when I feel a little bit of joy. Memories of my one-night stand with stranger Harry threatened to surface. But I tried not to think and fell asleep immediately. I woke up the next day to the smell of fresh bread on my bed table. And a note from Laura telling me to eat and have a long nice bath. They were out to sell battle loot. That was how we made a living; taking loot from a defeated Pack's territory after a Emberfall covenant pack victory and selling them to anyone who needed them. That was how I was found. Emberfall covenant pack only got their wealth from taking from others it was never earned rightfully. There was a knock on the door and I opened it to see Laura and what I assumed was a worried expression. "Verity, oh thank goodness, you're ok. I saw Lyra alone and I wanted to see if you're ok." "I'm fine, Laura you can leave now." "What's up with you?" That wasn't very nice what you said to me last night. I'm only trying to be there for you." "Oh, you're trying to be there for me?" I snapped, "Let me ask you something, Laura, how come you're only trying to be there for me when no one's looking? Are you afraid the Alpha will have your head if he finds out we're friends?" Laura was pissed now. "You know what, screw all of this! I'm out here risking my life every day just to be your friend, well no more. I'm done risking my life for you." "You're pathetic Laura," I slammed the door in her face relieved that I didn't have to hold back any emotions. I felt the weight of losing Laura every single day since then. And for two weeks my days were only filled with misery because there wasn't any Laura to look forward to. I had long forgotten about Harry and whoever he was when I woke up to a serious tummy ache. I got up and ran into the bathroom. Vomiting into the toilet seat. My chest heaved when I got up to flush. I stepped out of the toilet, running into Thomas, my adoptive father who had been away for months and only recently got back. "Are you okay, Verity? You look unusual." I nodded, "I'm alright." Our conversations lasted mostly two seconds. Killian will be absent today since he went for a Beta training session. That meant peace. Sometimes I would hope for him to fail every training because he was ruthless, but then again, if Jessica made him her Beta, I would see less of him. I was usually excluded from pack activities since I was weak. The only thing I could do was heal, but only in secret, I knew better than to let anyone know. I was back in my room, still nauseous. I placed my palm on my tummy, trying to harness my healing energy to know what was wrong with me. I stopped when I noticed a growth inside of me. My first thought was a tumor. But this tumor had a pulse, and there was a second heartbeat. My eyes widened when I processed the implications. At this rate, a tumor was better than finding out I was pregnant.
