Chapter 15: Kindred Spirit, Tang Yili

The most noticeable change in the city was the sharp decrease in the number of people and vehicles on the streets. Many stores had simply shut down, and only in front of a few large supermarkets could one see crowds of people. Ai Bing was a bit surprised. These past few days, she had been focused on the house, but seeing people frantically buying goods confused her. She asked Zhou Lin why this was happening. “Probably because they've gone crazy,” Zhou Lin chuckled. With Cheng Yali handling things, he didn’t need to fight ordinary people for supplies in the supermarket. It turned out that Cheng Yali had been busy all day yesterday, either managing stock or receiving shipments. Under Zhou Lin’s reminder, she had emptied a warehouse in the logistics park to store supplies. She had also sent Zhou Lin a message this morning, asking him to come and clear the warehouse when he had time. It was clear that the couple had discussed it last night. “Why not stay at Lanshan?” Ai Bing asked, a little unhappy. After all, the title deed of that house had her name on it. Why were they still going to the countryside? “It’s still being renovated,” Zhou Lin replied. “Wasn’t it already finished?” Ai Bing questioned. “Not yet,” Zhou Lin answered casually, and then he went silent. Ai Bing had no choice but to chat with Yang Kiki about cosmetics and luxury goods. It wasn’t much, but it kept her distracted. Soon, Zhou Lin overheard the two women discussing the idea of inviting more people over. To his surprise, Ai Bing mentioned the name "Tang Yili." Instantly, Zhou Lin sneered. He didn't know Tang Yili before the apocalypse, but in a way, they were both Ai Bing's lackeys. Ai Bing was skilled at managing her image and creating an allure that masked her true nature. She had put a lot of effort into shaping her appearance, and Tang Yili, a fitness coach, was just the right kind of person for her. Who made the first move didn't matter—what mattered was that Tang Yili had gone from being the big, bad dog to the little lapdog. If the apocalypse had never happened, Zhou Lin and Tang Yili might have been two peas in a pod, but when disaster struck, Tang Yili became Ai Bing’s vicious dog, attacking anyone who came near. Maybe it was the long hours of physical training that had made Tang Yili all brawn and no brains. In the hellish environment of the apocalypse, he had completely lost the ability to think. The humiliation Zhou Lin had suffered at Tang Yili's hands was something he could never forget. Now that Ai Bing wasn’t in Shenzhen, Zhou Lin had no idea where to find Tang Yili if she was dead. Tang Yili had to die! Thinking about the harm that mad dog had caused him, Zhou Lin couldn't suppress his anger! “Zhou Lin, Yang Kiki’s friend wants to come over and hang out. Is that okay with you?” Ai Bing suddenly asked. Yang Kiki's friend? “Yeah, not a boyfriend—just a good friend. You know what I mean, right?” Yang Kiki quickly added, covering for Ai Bing. Zhou Lin thought to himself, “I know alright!” He couldn't wait for Tang Yili to arrive so that Ai Bing could pay for her past actions. “The air quality in Shenzhen is terrible. Long-term exposure can cause lung cancer. If your friend has no pressing issues, maybe ask them to come over and stay for a while. They can go back when the environment improves.” “Lung cancer? Is it really that serious?” Ai Bing asked, surprised. “Haven’t you seen the reports online? Shifu Mountain is still erupting, and no one knows when it will stop. Property prices in Shenzhen have already dropped by 30%!” Sure enough, the only thing that caught Ai Bing’s attention was money—only interests made her think. When they returned to the farm, Zhou Lin saw several electric carts leaving in the distance. Those were the last few workers. The entire farm had been emptied. “It’s all gone,” Zhou Caijun said with a sigh. He had truly bet everything on this. If the apocalypse didn't happen, it would have been hard to restore the farm. “Dad, I really hope this so-called apocalypse is just a nightmare, but look at the sky...” Zhou Lin said, his voice trailing off. Zhou Caijun nodded sadly, only able to be thankful that his son had been reborn and had brought along a space. However, neither Zhou Caijun nor Cheng Yali had ever asked Zhou Lin about the details of his space. “D*mn, I forgot something important.” Zhou Lin suddenly slapped his forehead. “Mom asked me to collect things from the warehouse. It’s almost full.” “You dare forget what your mom told you? Hurry up!” Zhou Caijun urged. Luckily, the logistics park was close by. Zhou Lin reached it in just over ten minutes and found his family’s warehouse. “I thought you forgot, hurry up and go in. I’ll lock the door!” Cheng Yali was still here, apparently too busy even to eat lunch. Zhou Lin couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy. “Mom, are you hungry?” “Hungry... but I’m used to it. Hurry up, the next batch of goods is almost here.” Zhou Lin had no room to argue. He obediently went into the warehouse. Cheng Yali didn’t follow him in; instead, she immediately locked the door behind him. “What’s all this...” Zhou Lin’s gaze swept across the massive pile of supplies. There were at least thirty bags of 200-pound white sugar, each bag weighing about 90 kg. One corner of the warehouse was filled with bags of salt, each weighing 100 pounds. Other shelves were piled high with different kinds of chili peppers, soy sauce, sesame oil, and other spices. After half an hour of work, Zhou Lin suddenly felt his vision darken, his lips went numb, and his head grew heavy. His limbs grew weak, and cold sweat began to form on his forehead. “I’m doomed...” This thought barely crossed his mind before he collapsed onto the floor, passing out. It wasn’t until the next batch of goods arrived that Cheng Yali remembered Zhou Lin was still in the warehouse. She hurriedly opened the door and saw him lying on the ground. “What’s wrong? What happened?” She rushed to Zhou Lin's side, pinching his acupressure point while checking his pulse. When she confirmed that his heartbeat was still normal, she relaxed slightly. She increased the pressure on the acupressure point until Zhou Lin finally woke up with a groan. “Ouch... so hungry, Mom, I’m starving, I need food!” Zhou Lin’s head was still spinning, his eyes unfocused. “Eat this!” Cheng Yali immediately shoved a chocolate bar into his mouth. Then, she rummaged through a box in the warehouse and pulled out a large handful of chocolate bars. “You must take after your dad—low blood sugar,” she muttered. Zhou Lin didn’t respond, but took the second chocolate bar and ate it. He ate a total of ten bars before stopping, letting out a long sigh. “Always carry some sugar with you. Luckily I came in; otherwise, you’d be gone.” Zhou Lin smiled weakly. With Cheng Yali’s help, he managed to get up. He knew it wasn’t low blood sugar—it was likely due to the frequent use of his abilities.
