Chapter 29: The Curious Female Doctor

1292 Words
In the Beautiful Country, the Eden and Ark projects led by Miss Poland were progressing smoothly with the support of the country's top billionaires. Thanks to the foundation laid during World War II and years of relentless effort, before the Eternal Night descended, the Beautiful Country had one Eden, three Arks, eight super shelters, twenty-three large shelters, and many civilian shelters already in operation. These shelters clearly couldn’t accommodate the Beautiful Country’s two hundred million population, let alone the illegal immigrants who were not even counted in the statistics. But Miss Poland had never considered these people. Nevertheless, the Eden, Ark, and other shelter plans could indeed protect the most important elites and the wealthiest billionaires in the country. For reasons unknown, the location of the Eden was a secret, and only those notified knew where it was. The current president and his staff of the Beautiful Country had not even been given entry to the Eden. Inside Ark One, the elderly president of the Beautiful Country, Old Bai, trembled, his mind completely drained after several hours of constant reports from various departments. While he appeared to be listening attentively, his thoughts wandered, wondering when he could go "home" and eat dinner made by his wife. "I already know. Just proceed as planned. The follow-up solutions and the specific tasks for each department will be distributed to each of you. Just carry them out," he said, though these were not his own words but rather what the tiny earpiece in his ear instructed him to say. The secretary announced that the president's work for the day was over, and everyone was free to leave. After the door was shut, the secretary patted Old Bai on the shoulder. "Well done. Now you can go home and have dinner. Don’t worry, as long as you follow the instructions, your family will be fine." Old Bai nodded and, with the help of a bodyguard who was more like a nurse, sat in an electric wheelchair and left through a different door. Ark One, also known as the Washington Ark, could house over three hundred thousand people. It used nuclear power as its energy source, with everything from low-rise buildings to a resource center two hundred meters underground, divided into seven areas: Energy, Resource, Circulation, Production, Control, Residential, and Military. With its high-power communication equipment, the Washington Ark could exchange data with most of the Beautiful Country’s satellites in space, ensuring smooth communication and internet access. Arks Two and Three were similar in scale and setup to Ark One, normally accommodating three hundred thousand people, but in an emergency, they could take in up to one million. They were located on the east and west sides of the Beautiful Country, respectively. The eight super shelters were slightly smaller than the Arks but could house more people due to the absence of dedicated military zones. Normally, they could hold four hundred thousand people, and in an emergency, up to 1.2 million. Large shelters could hold two hundred thousand people under normal conditions, and up to five hundred thousand in an emergency. In total, without considering Eden, the Arks, super shelters, and large shelters could house nearly eight million people under normal conditions, and up to 24 million in an emergency. On paper, this seemed like a lot, but in reality, it was only about one-tenth of the Beautiful Country's population. The Eternal Night had only just begun, and the temperature had not yet dropped to the extreme. The resourceful citizens of the Beautiful Country were still doing their best to self-rescue. Compared to the Beautiful Country, the difficulties faced by the Summer Country’s government were much greater. The combined population of the top ten cities in the Summer Country was nearly equal to the total population of the Beautiful Country. Faced with such a large disaster-stricken population, the Summer Country’s government had to open up its entire defense system intended for wartime! Civilian defense works, underground tunnels, and the entire subway system became the best shelters from the cold. The local government, working together with the stationed military, helped control and guide the people into shelters, assigning areas and tasks... While not all cities could guarantee sufficient shelters for every citizen, the government did everything it could to protect its people, which was an impressive achievement. Meanwhile, more underground spaces were being developed, the modern industrial system was being repaired, new energy projects were underway, and underground food crop farms were being built, all progressing in an orderly manner. A large stockpile of food was being put into use, and even if there was no harvest for the next two years, the people would not go hungry. Of course, being full and eating well were two different things. Staple foods and the necessary fruits, vegetables, and trace elements were still a concern. In addition, a new communication system was being rapidly developed under national guidance. A space launch center had already begun preparing for a series of satellite launches. Unlike the current mobile communication system, the new system would not rely on ground-based stations. Though it would not be as fast or have as much bandwidth, it would be much more resistant to external interference. The reason Zhou Li could still go online was because of the satellite communication system. By using specialized software to send and receive text-based data, there was almost no delay. Zhou Li had modified the satellite communication equipment aboard Laifu and could directly connect to the Beautiful Country’s satellites in space, logging into the satellite network used by only a select few. "Zhou... Lin." Outside the makeshift gym in the living room, Wu Xue stared at the sweating figure inside, her eyes slightly glazed. It wasn't that she had any strange thoughts, but as a clinical doctor, she had a certain degree of professional curiosity. "Something wrong?" Zhou Lin paused his training and asked. "Oh, Li Li said you need to approve it before she can open the permissions for me. I want... I want to try contacting my parents," Wu Xue replied, her eyes scanning Zhou Lin from top to bottom, paying no attention to his discomfort. What was this girl up to now? Why does she need my approval? "Sure, I'll talk to her after I finish. Anything else?" Zhou Lin asked, noticing that Wu Xue didn't seem to be leaving. "Well... how long did it take you to train to this point?" Wu Xue took a step forward and felt the heat radiating from Zhou Lin's body, causing her to feel slightly dizzy. "I don't really remember," Zhou Lin shrugged, turning his back. He mostly didn’t want to look Wu Xue in the eye. Training? If his body hadn’t started evolving, the difference between him and the “lazy couch potato” would probably only be a few dozen pounds! But then again, the effects of evolution were quite noticeable. In just two or three days, every muscle in his body seemed to be in peak condition. Compared to his appearance, Zhou Lin found that the feeling of his increasing strength was far more pleasant. After all, in an apocalypse, looks wouldn’t feed you, but strength could help you live longer. "Can I collect some data?" Wu Xue asked out of nowhere as Zhou Lin continued his training. "Sure... but do you have the equipment?" "I have some at home... I’ll go get it now!" As Wu Xue rushed downstairs to get the equipment, Zhou Lin turned to the living room and muttered, "What do you mean?" "Big bro, are you playing dumb? Don’t you understand? If a woman owes you enough, even if she doesn’t like you, out of gratitude, she’ll eventually accept you. Don’t you like her?"
