CHAPTER 5 Weeks slowly turned into months, and though the calls remained long and the words stayed just as sweet, a subtle, quiet distance began to settle between them. It was not the coldness of anger or misunderstanding, but something softer and more inevitable—like the gentle fading of daylight as evening approaches. Malay started mentioning he was busy more often; his replies, while still warm, sometimes came hours later, and their conversations no longer stretched deep into the night as they once did. Yuah noticed, too, that he spoke less and less about what might lie ahead, and focused only on the present moment, as if he knew there was no future waiting for them beyond right now. One evening, as they sat in comfortable silence on a video call, Malay spoke in a voice that felt lighter, yet strangely final. “You know,” he said slowly, “you helped me get through the hardest part. These past months, I carried such a heavy weight in my chest that I thought I would never be able to breathe freely again. But because of you, because of your patience and your kindness, I don’t feel that heaviness anymore. I can finally look at each day without feeling like I’m drowning in memories.” Yuah smiled back at him, but her chest felt tight, as if something was gently squeezing her heart. She had known this moment would come, but hearing it said out loud still made her eyes sting. “You helped me too,” she replied softly, her voice steady but full of quiet emotion. “When we first met, I was still picking up the pieces of what broke me. I thought I would stay sad and lonely forever, but you made me feel seen again. You reminded me that I still had so much love to give, and that I deserved care too.” In that honest exchange, they both understood exactly what it meant, yet neither dared to speak it directly. Malay had found exactly what he needed when he reached out: a safe distraction, a steady companion, and a gentle way to pass the empty hours until his heart was strong enough to stand on its own again. He had not come looking for a new love, but for a shelter while he healed—and Yuah had become that shelter perfectly. Yuah, in her own way, had done the same. She had leaned on his presence to forget her own pain, to feel wanted and valued again after being left behind. Their connection had acted like a soothing balm, covering the wounds until they began to close and heal from within. They had been good for each other—wonderfully, perfectly good—but only for a season. Deep down, both knew the truth: they were never meant to build a life together. Neither wanted to name what they felt as love, because love would mean promises, commitment, and staying no matter what. And they both knew, even if they did not say it aloud, that they were only visitors in each other’s lives. They had walked alongside one another for a specific stretch of the road, but their paths were always meant to diverge once they reached the place of healing. What they shared was real, genuine, and deeply meaningful. It was comfort, understanding, and companionship in its purest form—but it was not the kind of love that lasts forever. It was the kind that comes just long enough to help two broken hearts become whole again, and then quietly makes space for what comes next.
