The BanquetMartha and her grandfather Paulus, noting how tired and pale and anxious she seemed, accepted Ethne into their home at once. Lucius was loath to leave her but Demosthenes had been so sure it would be in her best interest, that he did so after a meal and a night’s sleep.
Martha saw how the two gazed at each other in the morning when it came time to part, and she longed to have such a relationship of her own. For a while it seemed as though they would say goodbye without touching, but as Lucius walked down the path Ethne suddenly broke away from her hosts and ran after him.
