Kael I heard a sound that I did not like. It was one never heard before in the underground caverns, where I hunted and gathered food. I paused in the act of cutting open the larkarg I had just killed. I threw it in my sack and dashed off in the direction of the noise. It reminded me of Tarla, if she were screaming. She was supposed to be tucked safely away in my—our—shelter. If she had found her way here, she was in trouble. Navigating the caverns was a lesson in precision. I snarled at myself as I darted through the labyrinth of tunnels. I should never have left her. I should not have assumed she would stay inside. Of course, she would leave. She was an explorer from Earth, a planet very far away. That was something I had learned. Her people were more technologically advanced than mine
