Chapter 4: The door opened

305 Words
The doorknob turned. Slow. Metal scraping against metal. A sound that cut through the dust and the silence like a blade. Lila’s heart stopped. The diary burned in her hands, still warm from the words she wasn’t supposed to read. _Mark Hale killed my brother._ The door creaked open an inch. Then two. A shadow fell across the floorboards. Tall. Familiar. “Found you,” a voice said. Low. Calm. The voice she’d heard at dinner. The voice that signed the checks. Mark Hale. His eyes dropped to the diary in her hands. His smile didn’t reach them. “Reading things you shouldn’t, Lila?” Lila forced her voice steady. “I-I was just looking for old photos.” Mark stepped inside. Closed the door behind him with a soft click. Too soft. Too final. He didn’t look angry. He looked... tired. “Do you know why my brother wrote that, Lila?” Lila frowned. “Your brother?” Mark laughed. Once. Bitter. “My brother didn’t write it.” The air in the attic shifted. From the corner, behind the old trunk, another shadow moved. A woman stepped out. Elegant. Silver hair. Pearls. The kind of smile that never touched the eyes. Mrs. Evelyn Hale. Mark’s mother. “Hello, dear,” she said softly. “I see you found my diary.” Lila’s blood turned to ice. Mrs. Hale glided forward, never taking her eyes off Lila. “Mark didn’t kill your brother, child. I did.” She tilted her head. “And I’ve been pulling the strings in this house for 20 years. Mark just signs the checks I tell him to sign.” The diary in Lila’s hands suddenly felt like a bomb. “Now,” Mrs. Hale smiled. “The question is... what are we going to do with you?”
