Lila didn’t think. She ran. The attic door slammed behind her. Heavy boots thundered on the stairs. “Stop!” a voice barked. Mark grabbed her wrist and yanked her down a narrow hallway she’d never seen before. “Service corridor,” he breathed. “It leads to the garage.” Behind them, Mrs. Hale’s voice echoed, calm and furious. “Find them. Bring the girl to me. Alive.” Lila’s lungs burned. The diary was clutched to her chest like armor. “Your mom wants me dead?” she whispered. “She wants the diary,” Mark said, pushing open a door. Cold night air hit them. “And she’ll kill anyone who gets in the way.” The garage was dark. One car. Keys in the ignition. Mark shoved her into the passenger seat and floored it. Tires screeched. The gate ahead began to close. “Hold on,” Mark said. They shot through the gap with inches to spare. Metal screamed against the car. In the rearview mirror, Lila saw them. Mrs. Hale standing in the doorway, phone to her ear. And 3 black SUVs pulling out after them. Mark glanced at Lila. His face was hard, but his hand found hers for half a second. “I’m sorry I got you into this.” Lila looked down at the diary. Then at him. “You didn’t. My brother did. And I’m not stopping until I know why.” The headlights behind them got closer. *TO BE CONTINUED...*
