“Mark,” Mrs. Hale said slowly. “Are you protecting her?”
Mark forced a laugh. “Don’t be ridiculous.”
“Then open the closet.”
The world stopped.
Lila’s heart slammed against her ribs. How—
Mark’s face didn’t change. But his eyes flicked to the closet. Just for a second.

Mrs. Hale smiled. That cold, perfect smile.
“Sweetheart,” she said. “I installed the cameras myself.”
Lila closed her eyes.
The closet door clicked open before she could move.
Mrs. Hale stood there, looking down at her like a teacher catching a student cheating.

She pulled Lila out and shoved the diary into her own purse.
“You and me, Mark,” Mrs. Hale said softly. “We’re the same. Don’t pretend you’re better than me just because you grew a conscience.”
Mark’s jaw ticked.
“Then let her walk away. This isn’t her fight.”
Mrs. Hale looked at Lila. Then at Mark.
“It is now.”
She raised her phone.
“Security is 30 seconds away. The question is... do we take her in, or do we make this look like an accident?”
