Friday, last period. Chloe was supposed to be in Bio. Instead she was in the library, trying to finish a paper. Her phone buzzed. Maya: Where are you? It’s urgent. Chloe texted back: Library. Why? Maya: Come to the old art wing. Now. Dont tell Zoe. The don’t tell Zoe part hit wrong. They told each other everything.Chloe’s stomach flipped and her chest tightened. She grabbed her books and shoved them in her bag she walked fast cutting through empty hall ways. The art wing was abandoned after 3pm. Dusty easels, broken windows, no one around. Maya was waiting by the back door, arms crossed. Her face wasn’t angry. It was worse. It was pity. “What’s going on?” Chloe asked. Maya tired her phone around and hot play. The video was shaky. Filmed fro behind a dumpster during short break today. Allan and Zoe. Behind the science block. Wher security cameras didn’t reach. Allan had Zoe’s hands pinned above her head against a brick wall. They were laughing, then they kissed. Not a quick peck. Slow, familiar Like they’d done it before. Chloe’s vision went white. She couldn’t breathe. She watched it twice in disbelief. Maya stopped the video. “I followed him,” she said quietly. Her voice was flat and controlled. “I had a feeling after lunch. He kept checking his phone and smiling at nothing. So I skipped Chem. I’m sorry, Chloe. Chloe shook her head. “Zoe wouldn’t. She’s— We’re the trio. Since 7th grade. She taught me how to contour. I helped her with her SAT essay. She wouldn’t “She’s not,” Maya said. “Not anymore.” Footsteps. Allan came through the door first. Then Zoe. Both stopped when they saw Chloe’s face. “What’s wrong babe “Allan asked Chloe. “shut you cheat” Chloe replied with anger. Allan’s mask cracked instantly. “Chloe, wait—” “Don’t,” Chloe whispered. Her voice was flat, dead. She turned to Zoe and you I trusted you I thought you were my friend, my best friend, only for you to go and make out with my boyfriend. Zoe looked guilty for half a second. Then her expression went blank. She“He told me you two weren’t serious,” she said. “Just flirting.” “Flirting?” Chloe laughed, but it hurt. “We were official. Two weeks ago. In the cafeteria. You were there, Zoe.” “I know,” Zoe said. She wouldn’t meet Chloe’s eyes. “But he said he liked me better, he said I was prettier. That you were... complicated. With your dad’s company and all.” Chloe turned to Allan. Is all this true Allan stayed silent refusing to meet her eyes “Say something.” Chloe yelled at him. Allan stepped forward, hands up like she was a wild animal. “Chloe, please. Let me explain. It started as nothing. She was just—” “Just what?” Chloe snapped. “A backup plan?” “No,” Allan said fast. “I care about you. I do. But my dad— Pierce Tech needs investors. Your dad’s company, Williams Development, is bidding on the new campus. If I get close to you, if I date you, my dad said he could get us the inside track. It was supposed to be business.” Chloe stared at him. “Business.” “Yeah,” Allan said. “But then I actually—” He glanced at Zoe. “It got messy. I didn’t mean for you to get hurt.” Maya made a disgusted sound. “You mean you didn’t mean to get caught.” Allan ignored her. He dropped to his knees right there on the dusty floor. “Chloe, I’m begging you. We can fix this. Tell your dad I was serious about you. Not about the deal. Please.” “You’ll what?” Maya stepped between them, blocking him. “Give back the last month? Give back the trust? Give me back my best friend?” She looked at Zoe. “You sat at my dinner table last week. You ate my mom’s lasagna. You laughed when I said I’d cut anyone who hurt Chloe. And you did it anyway.” Zoe covered her face. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” Chloe looked down at him. The boy who drew her a crown. Who brought her coffee. Who said I remember everything you say. All of it was a pitch. “It was all just business “she scoffed clearly in pain She felt nothing. No tears. No screaming. Just cold and numb. “You used me,” Chloe said quietly. “To get to my dad. And you used Zoe to make me jealous, didn’t you? Or did you actually like her too?” Zoe flinched. “I didn’t—” “Save it,” Chloe cut her off. “Both of you. You destroyed the trio. You destroyed me.” Allan stood up, desperate now. “Chloe, don’t do this. I can make it right. I’ll tell my dad I don’t care about Williams Development. I’ll—” “You’ll what?” Maya stepped between them. “Give back the texts? The dates? The lie?” She looked at Zoe. “You were my best friend too. How could you?” Zoe finally cried. “I always liked him, I thought he never noticed me because of you,so I stopped trying but then he asked me out I tried to refuse because of our friendship but he said Chloe would never even notice. That she was always busy with her dad’s stuff. I thought— I don’t know what I thought.” Chloe picked up Maya’s phone. She deleted the video. Not because she was forgiving them. Because she didn’t want it anywhere but in her head. She looked at Allan one last time. “You want to know what’s complicated? Having to pretend I don’t know you tomorrow. Having to sit next to you in AP Lit and act normal. That’s complicated.” She turned and walked to the door. Allan called after her: “Chloe, wait! I swear I—” Maya looped her arm through Chloe’s. Consoling her .“Let him plead,” she said softly. “We’re done listening.” They walked out of the art wing together. Behind them, Allan was still talking. Zoe was still crying. Neither of them mattered anymore. Outside, the air felt sharper. Colder. Maya squeezed Chloe’s hand. “Trio’s back,” she said. “Now it’s Just us two. And we’re getting even.” Chloe nodded. For the first time since she saw that video, she smiled. It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t forgiving. it was the wheels of revenge in motion.
