Chapter3

1102 Words
"His name is Jake," Maya replied, trying to sound casual. "We're going to get ice cream together this weekend." Karen's expression turned skeptical. "Maya, I don't know if that's such a good idea. You don't really know this boy." Maya felt a surge of frustration. Why did Karen always assume the worst about her? "Karen, I can handle it," Maya said, her voice firm. "Besides, Jake is really nice. You don't have to worry." Karen sighed. "Fine, but be careful, okay?" Maya nodded, feeling a sense of relief. Maybe, just maybe, she was finally starting to break free from Karen's constant criticism. As Maya left the kitchen, she couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off. Karen was never that nice to her without a reason. She wondered if Karen was just having a good day, but deep down, she knew better. As she approached the guest room, she heard muffled voices coming from inside. She slowed down, trying not to make a sound, and listened. It was Karen's husband, John, and some other people Maya didn't recognize. They were talking about business and laughing together. Suddenly, it clicked. Maya understood why Karen was being so nice to her. It was because they had visitors, and they wanted to put on a good show. They didn't want Maya to make them look bad in front of their guests, so Karen was pretending to be the perfect mother. Maya felt a wave of sadness wash over her. She was just a pawn in their game, a puppet they controlled to save their reputation. She went into her room and collapsed onto her bed, tears streaming down her face. How long would she have to feel like this? How long would she be trapped in this loveless home, forced to play a role she didn't want to play? Maya cried, feeling like she was losing herself in the process. As Maya changed out of her school uniform and into her comfortable house clothes, she heard the sound of doors opening and closing. She knew that the visitors were leaving, and a sense of dread washed over her. She knew that as soon as they were gone, Karen and John's true selves would emerge, and her torture for the day would begin. Maya tried to prepare herself, but she couldn't shake off the feeling of anxiety that settled in her stomach. She heard the final outward door close, and the sound of cars zooming out of the compound. She took a deep breath, thinking that maybe, just maybe, she could escape their wrath for once. But then, she heard her name being called. "Maya!" Karen's voice echoed through the hallway, firm and commanding. Maya's heart sank. She knew that she couldn't ignore Karen's call, no matter how much she wanted to. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for what was to come. And with that, Maya's fate for the rest of the day was sealed... Maya's heart raced as Karen stormed into her room, her face twisted in anger. "You think you're so smart, don't you?" Karen sneered, her voice dripping with venom. "You think you can just waltz in here and pretend like everything is fine?" Maya took a step back, her eyes fixed on Karen's furious face. "I don't know what you're talking about," she stammered, trying to sound calm. "Don't play dumb with me!" Karen shouted, her hand flying up to slap Maya's face. "You know exactly what I'm talking about. Your little stunt earlier, trying to make us look bad in front of our guests." Maya's cheek stung from the slap, but she refused to cry. "I didn't do anything," she protested, her voice shaking. John appeared in the doorway, his eyes cold and hard. "Maya, you're a constant disappointment to us," he sneered. "You're a failure, just like your real parents." "You're nothing but a burden to us," Karen spat, her words dripping with malice. "We took you in out of pity, and this is how you repay us? By embarrassing us in front of our friends?" Maya felt a surge of anger at Karen's words, but she knew better than to speak up. She had learned that defending herself only made things worse. "You're just like your mother," John sneered, his voice full of disgust. "Weak and pathetic. No wonder she abandoned you." Maya's eyes stung as tears pricked at the corners. She hated it when they brought up her real parents. She knew nothing about them, and the not knowing was a constant ache in her heart. "Why do you always have to bring them up?" Maya asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Because you need to remember where you came from," Karen snapped. "You need to remember that you're nothing without us." Maya felt a wave of despair wash over her. Would she ever be free from their cruelty? "You're so ungrateful," Karen said, her voice rising in anger. "We give you a roof over your head, food on the table, and this is how you repay us? By being a constant disappointment?" Maya felt a lump form in her throat as she tried to speak, but the words wouldn't come. She knew that anything she said would only make things worse. "You're just like all the others," John said, his voice dripping with disdain. "A foster kid who thinks the world owes them a living. Well, let me tell you something, Maya. No one owes you anything." Maya felt a tear roll down her cheek as she looked away, trying to hide her pain. She knew that she couldn't take much more of this. "You're going to regret the day you ever crossed us," Karen spat, her eyes blazing with anger. "You're going to regret the day you ever came into our lives." Maya felt a chill run down her spine as Karen's words hung in the air. She knew that she was trapped in a living nightmare, and she didn't know how to escape. "I hate you," Maya whispered, her voice barely audible. Karen's face turned red with rage. "How dare you!" she shouted, her hand flying up to slap Maya again. John caught Karen's arm, his eyes glinting with cruelty. "No, let her think she hates us," he sneered. "It'll make it all the more sweet when she realizes she can't escape us." Maya felt a surge of fear at John's words. She knew that she was trapped, and that they would never let her go. Maya's heart sank at their words, knowing she was in for a world of pain.
