My mouth dropped, the plate still crushed between my fingers. I was trying to organize my thoughts when she spat again.
"Are you deaf? Or just plain stupid?"
Jesus. Luther’s girlfriend kept throwing insults in my face. She hated me, and I needed to show her I wasn’t a threat to her relationship.
"Hey, Paris. No, I’m not deaf."
She took another menacing step, stopping close enough for me to breathe in her sweet, expensive perfume. "Don’t Paris me. I told you to leave."
She actually hadn’t. But poking the beast wasn’t smart. I needed a different approach.
"I’ll be staying for a short while. Just until I get my things in order." Honest, but vague enough not to set her off.
