Chapter 2: The Whiplash Of Betrayal
ROSE POV
The silence in the big ballroom was so heavy it felt like it was crushing my chest. Just a minute ago, everyone was cheering for Leo’s engagement, but now, every eye in the room was on me. I stood there in my cheap, scratchy servant’s uniform, feeling like a piece of trash on a golden floor. My heart was beating so fast I thought it would explode. I was waiting for Leo to run down the stairs, grab me, and tell me this was all a big joke.
"Leo..." I whispered again. My voice was shaking so much I could hardly speak. "What are you saying? This morning... in your bed... you told me I was your soulmate. You told me everything would change."
Leo looked down at me from the high stage. The heat I had seen in his eyes this morning was gone. There was no love left. Instead, his face was cold and mean. He looked at me like I was something disgusting he had stepped on in the street. He didn't even flinch when he saw my tears.
"I have no idea what this girl is talking about," Leo said. His voice was loud and clear so everyone could hear. He turned to Elara, the Prime Minister’s daughter, and gave her a fake, sweet smile. "I am so sorry, my love. It looks like one of the servants has gone crazy. She has been stalking me for months. She is obsessed with the idea that a Prince would ever touch a wolfless loser like her."
The whole room started to laugh. It wasn't a nice laugh; it was a mean, jagged sound that hurt my ears. The rich people in their diamonds and silk pointed at me and whispered.
"A wolfless Omega?" a lady in a purple dress sneered. "She really thought a Prince would want her? How pathetic."
"Look at her blue eyes," a man laughed. "She must be possessed. She’s a delusional little stray."
I felt like the floor was falling away from under me. I looked up at Leo, begging for a sign. I wanted to see the man who had held me so tight just hours ago. But he just stood there with his arm around Elara’s waist. He looked at me like I was a bug he wanted to squash.
"I never touched you, Rose," Leo spat. The lie came out of his mouth so easily it made me sick. "You are just a servant. You are nothing. Guards, get this crazy girl out of my sight!"
Before the guards could grab me, a sharp voice stopped them. "Wait!"
The Empress, Leo’s mother, stepped forward. Her red dress moved like blood behind her. She had a cruel smile on her face as she looked at me. She had always hated me, and now she finally had a reason to destroy me.
"It is worse than just madness, Leo," the Empress said. She held up a small, velvet box. Inside was a large, glowing royal diamond. "The palace guards searched the servant’s quarters this evening. They found this hidden under Rose’s mattress. She isn't just a stalker; she is a thief who stole from the royal family."
"No! That’s not true!" I screamed. I had never seen that diamond in my life. "I didn't steal anything! Leo, tell them! You know I was with you!"
Leo didn't say a word. He just turned his back on me. The guards grabbed my arms, their heavy hands bruising my skin. They dragged me across the floor, my feet scraping against the marble. I fought and kicked, but I was just a powerless Omega. They dragged me out of the warm ballroom and into the cold night air of the courtyard.
The guards threw me down onto the hard stone floor. The Empress and Leo came out onto the balcony to watch. The crowd of rich people followed them, looking down at me like I was a show.
"Strip her!" the Empress commanded.
I screamed as the guards ripped my servant’s uniform off. They didn't care that I was naked in the cold wind. They tied my wrists to a heavy wooden execution block. My skin was pressed against the rough, dirty wood. I felt so small and so ashamed. I looked up at the balcony, hoping for a miracle. I saw Leo whispering something into Elara’s ear, and then they both started laughing. He was laughing while I was being prepared for death.
"Fifty lashes for the thief!" the Empress yelled. "Then, off with her head!"
The first lash of the whip hit my back like a lightning bolt. I let out a scream that tore through my throat. The pain was so hot and sharp I thought I would pass out. I felt the warm blood start to run down my skin. The second lash hit, and then the third. Each hit was a reminder of Leo’s lies. I looked up through my tears and saw Leo taking a sip of wine, his eyes cold and bored.
I was losing hope. The executioner stepped forward, holding a giant, heavy axe. He raised it high above his head, the metal shining in the moonlight. I closed my eyes and prayed for it to be over. I was a wolfless girl with nothing left to live for.
Suddenly, a sound like thunder shook the ground. It wasn't thunder—it was the roar of a giant black helicopter. It flew low over the palace, the wind from the blades knocking people over. It landed right in the middle of the courtyard, blowing dust and dirt everywhere.
The door opened, and two men stepped out. They were huge. They were wearing expensive black suits that cost more than the whole palace. They had dark hair and eyes that looked like they could burn through stone. They were the most handsome and terrifying Alphas I had ever seen. They were Malachi and Maverick, Leo’s twin stepbrothers who had been gone for ten years.
The whole courtyard went silent. Not even the Empress dared to speak. The twins walked forward, their boots clicking against the stone. They didn't look at the King or the Empress. They looked straight at me.
As they got closer, the air around me started to change. I felt a sudden, electric pull in my soul. My blood started to hum, and for the first time in my life, I felt a spark of power deep inside me. The pain from my back seemed to fade away as their scent—smelling like rain and dark forest—filled my nose.
Malachi and Maverick stopped right in front of the execution block. Their eyes turned a glowing, feral gold. They looked at my bleeding back and then at the nakedness of my body. A low, vibrating growl started in their chests. It was a sound of pure, deadly rage.
They turned their heads at the same time and looked up at the balcony where Leo was standing. Their voices came out together, a deep, primal roar that shook the very foundation of the palace.
"MATE!"
