CHAPTE 5:THE BLOCKADE AND THE BARGAIN

~ Nora POV ~ "Nora!" Marcus lunged forward, his face turning pale as he reached out to grab my arm. I stepped back smoothly, my movements fluid and deliberate. Before his fingers could even graze the fabric of my sleeve, three of my personal guards stepped into the space between us. They moved with perfect discipline, their rifles snapping up to aim directly at his head. The cold click of weapon safety switches echoed through the courtyard. Marcus stopped dead in his tracks, his hands trembling in midair as he stared at the barrels pointed at his face. He looked unhinged, his eyes wide and bloodshot as he stared at me through the wall of armed soldiers. "Don't touch me," I said, keeping my voice flat, modern, and professional. "I am here on business, Alpha. Let's not make this messy before we even step inside." "How are you alive?" Marcus demanded, his voice cracking. The authority he used to carry was gone, replaced by a desperate, shaky tone that made him sound like a ghost of the man who had rejected me. "We found your blood. We found your necklace in the briars. I heard the bond snap. How are you standing here?" I didn't answer his question. I didn't owe him an explanation, and I certainly wasn't going to satisfy his curiosity. I adjusted the strap of my armor, looking past him toward the large pack house. "Your trade routes are dead, Marcus," I said, changing the subject instantly to focus on the reality of his situation. "Alpha Roger has your southern passage locked down tightly. Your storage houses have less than three weeks of grain left, and your medical supplies are running dangerously low. You are facing total starvation, yet you are standing out here wasting time asking me about the past." "You don't get to come into our territory and lecture us, girl," Elder Vance called out, stepping forward from the entrance of the house. He leaned heavily on his cane, his wrinkled face twisting into a furious scowl. "You signed a contract with this pack. Under territorial law, you answer to the council. Deploy your forces to the western border immediately and break Roger's blockade. That is an order." I turned my head slowly, looking at the old man through my pitch-black eyes. I let out a loud, mocking laugh that cut right through his attempts at authority. "Order me?" I asked, tilting my head. "You truly have no idea how deep a hole you have dug for yourselves, do you? You think you paid a standard fee to hire a standard army to fight your little war." "We paid your agency the requested gold," Tyler snapped, clenching his fists as he stood near Marcus. "You are obligated to fight for us." "The gold you sent doesn't even cover the fuel for my trucks, Tyler," I said, stepping closer to the council members. "Let me let you in on a little secret. Who do you think is funding Alpha Roger’s blockade in the first place? Who do you think bought out his debts and supplied him with the weapons he is using to line your borders?" The courtyard went dead silent. Marcus froze, his gaze darting from me to Tyler, then back again. "It was you," Marcus whispered, the realization hitting him visibly as his shoulders dropped. "I own his supply lines," I stated clearly, letting my cold smile widen just enough to show them who held all the cards. "I am the one paying him to starve you out. I created the crisis, and I am the only one who can solve it. Roger doesn't take a single step without my permission. If I tell him to squeeze tighter, your people will be begging for scraps by Tuesday." "You monster!" Camille shrieked from behind the guards, her face turning a bright, angry pink. "You are trying to destroy us!" "I am running a business, Camille," I replied smoothly, not even looking at her. "And right now, Shadow Fang is a failing company. I am here to negotiate a restructuring." "What do you want, Nora?" Marcus asked. He looked older than his years, his hands still shaking as he tried to stabilize his breathing. The confidence he once possessed during the rejection ceremony was entirely buried under the weight of his failing territory. "Name your price. We will pay whatever gold you want." "I don't want your gold, Marcus. I have plenty of my own," I said, gesturing for my guards to follow me as I walked past him toward the doors of the building. "Let's take this into the meeting room. Bring the paperwork." A few minutes later, we were gathered around the large table inside the council room. The atmosphere was incredibly tense. Marcus sat at the head of the table, looking drained, while Tyler and Elder Vance stood behind him like nervous shadows. I remained standing at the opposite end, leaning my hands flat against the dark surface. "Here is my sole condition," I announced, sliding a thick document across the table. It slid smoothly over the wood, stopping right in front of Marcus's trembling fingers. "We are going to enter a strict contract marriage. You and me." Tyler let out a harsh gasp. "Are you insane? You want to be the female Alpha after everything that happened?" "Don't flatter yourself, Tyler," I said coldly. "This isn't a romantic reconciliation. This is a corporate takeover. Look at the terms on page four." Marcus opened the folder, his eyes scanning the lines of text rapidly. As he read, his face turned from pale to white. "You want total operational command," Marcus muttered, his voice barely a whisper. "You want control over our warrior patrols, our trade distribution, our resources, and our internal security. You are stripping the Alpha office of all its power." "Exactly," I said, crossing my arms over my chest. "The marriage is simply the legal framework required to make the pack accept my presence without a civil war breaking out. On paper, we are mates who reunited. In reality, you are surrendering your authority to the Ghost Blade. I will manage the borders, I will lift the blockade, and I will save your people from dying. In exchange, you become a figurehead." "We will never agree to this!" Elder Vance shouted, banging his cane against the floor. "This is treason! Marcus, do not sign that garbage. We can find another way." "There is no other way, Vance," I reminded him, my voice dropping to a dangerous, quiet register. "If Marcus doesn't sign that contract before the clock strikes five, my forces will pull out of the valley. By midnight, I will authorize Roger to launch a full-scale invasion. Your sick warriors won't even last an hour against his front lines. Your territory will be wiped off the map." Marcus stared down at the document, his breath coming in short, uneven gasps. He looked trapped, his eyes moving from the contract to the older council members who were muttering frantically among themselves. He knew the numbers. He knew the state of his defenses. He knew he had zero leverage. He looked up at me, his eyes searching my face for any sign of the girl he used to know, any hint of warmth or hesitation. He found nothing. My face remained a mask of pure, unyielding stone. My black eyes reflected nothing but the dim light of the room. "Marcus, don't do it," Camille pleaded, rushing into the room and grabbing his shoulder. "She is a traitor. We can fight!" Marcus didn't look at her. He slowly reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a black ink pen. His fingers were still twitching, the pressure of the moment clearly pushing him to his limit. He lowered the pen toward the signature line at the bottom of the page. "This saves the pack?" Marcus asked, his voice dead and hollow. "It keeps them alive," I replied simply. "Which is more than you can say for your current strategy." With a slow, shaky stroke, Marcus pressed the pen to the paper. He signed his name quickly, the ink black and bold against the white sheets. The moment he finished, he dropped the pen onto the table, letting it roll away as he slumped back into his seat, looking defeated. He had just signed away the control of his family's legacy. I reached forward, snatched the document off the table, and tucked it securely into my armor jacket. I didn't smile, and I didn't offer a single word of comfort. "Good choice, Marcus," I said, turning toward the door as my soldiers moved to flank me once again. "Welcome to your new reality. Pack your bags. We are moving into the royal quarters tonight.”
