CHAPTE 2: THE REJECTION CEREMONY

~ Marcus POV ~ "Are you completely insane, Marcus?" Tyler shouted, slamming his hands down on the large table. "Marrying a prisoner from a destroyed pack will ruin everything we built. The council will remove you from the throne before sunset, and a civil war will break out by morning." "Do you think I chose this, Tyler?" I growled, my heart racing fast against my ribs as I paced across the room. "The bond just locked into place. I felt it, you felt the blast, and every guard in the building saw it happen." "It does not matter what you felt," Tyler said, his voice dropping low as he stepped closer to me. "She is an omega from an enemy line. Her family fought against your father for years. If you accept her as your mate, you show the entire territory that we are weak." I squeezed my hands into tight fists, my knuckles turning white. Inside my mind, my wolf was scratching wildly, begging me to run back to the hall and pull the girl into my arms. The pull was crazy, making my blood run hot and my breath come in short, uneven gasps. Every part of my body wanted to protect her, to claim her, to keep her safe from the guards. But logic fought back against the instinct. Tyler was right. I had just spent years securing my position as Alpha after the war. My pack needed a strong leader, not someone who surrendered to a weak bond with a servant. "I am not weak," I muttered, forcing my wolf down into the dark corners of my mind. "I will handle this." "Then call the elders," Tyler demanded, pointing toward the door. "Call them now, before the rumors spread through the town. You need to show them where your loyalty lies before they turn on you." I took a deep, shaky breath, fighting the internal fire that threatened to burn my control away. "Tell the guards to bring her to the council room. Call the assembly immediately." Ten minutes later, the large council room was packed with people. The elders sat in a large semi-circle around the central floor, their wrinkled faces tight with anger and worry. Standing near the side was Camille, my fiancée, her expensive dress rustling as she tapped her foot against the floor. Her face was twisted in a nasty sneer, her eyes tracking my every movement as I walked toward the front of the room. "Is it true, Marcus?" Elder Vance asked, his old voice shaking as he leaned forward. "Did the enemy girl trigger a bond?" Before I could answer, the side doors opened with a loud rattle. Two guards dragged Nora into the center of the room. Heavy iron chains rattled around her wrists and ankles, scraping against the floor with every step she took. Her shirt was torn, her hands were still bleeding from her work, and she looked tiny standing before the council. Yet, she kept her chin up, looking straight ahead instead of dropping her gaze to the floor. The moment she entered, my wolf went crazy again, screaming at me to tear the guards apart for putting chains on our mate. I had to bite the inside of my cheek to keep from letting out an alpha growl. "Look at this pathetic creature," Camille mocked, stepping forward and laughing openly at Nora. "You expect us to believe that this garbage is meant to be the next female Alpha of our pack? She looks like she belongs in the dirt, not on a throne." Nora didn't say a word. She didn't even look at Camille. Her dark eyes remained locked onto mine, watching me with a quiet intensity that made my throat feel dry. "This is a disaster, Marcus," another elder called out, shaking his head. "Our laws are clear. We cannot have an enemy bloodline mixing with the royal line. It threatens the safety of our entire territory." "She has no power," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "She is a prisoner." "She is a distraction!" Elder Vance shouted, standing up from his seat. "The people are already talking. They are afraid you will show her mercy because of the bond. You must declare your allegiance to the pack's security right now, or we will find an Alpha who will." The pressure in the room grew immense, pressing down on me from every side. I looked at the elders, then at Camille, who was smiling as if she had already won Finally, I looked back at Nora. If I accepted her, my people would revolt, Roger’s neighboring pack would attack us while we were divided, and everything I fought for would die. I had to choose the throne, I had to choose my pack. I stepped down from my platform, my boots hitting the floor with loud, echoing thuds. The room went dead silent as I walked right up to Nora, stopping just two feet away from her. The warmth of the bond tried to push through my skin again, begging me to touch her, but I forced my expression to remain a mask of pure ice. "Nora," I said, my voice echoing clearly off the walls so every single person could hear me. She stared back at me, her face calm, her breath steady. "You are a servant from a fallen pack," I said, forcing the words out even as my wolf roared in pure agony inside my head. "You are an enemy to my people, and you are a distraction that I cannot afford. You are unworthy of my throne, and I will never allow you to rule by my side." I took a deep breath, locking my eyes onto hers to ensure she felt the weight of my decision. "I, Alpha Marcus of the Shadow Fang pack, formally reject you as my fated mate," I stated clearly. "I break this bond permanently." The words tore through my own chest like a blade, causing a sudden, sharp pain to explode in my heart. I stumbled back half a step, my hands trembling as the invisible connection between us snapped into pieces. The pain was brutal, leaving me breathless as the golden energy withered away into nothing. I waited for her to break. I waited for her to fall to her knees, to cry, or to beg me to change my mind. Every rejected mate fell apart from the emotional damage. But Nora didn't shed a single tear. Instead, a terrifying change passed over her. She stood perfectly still as the pain hit her, her jaw tightening just for a second. Then, the normal dark color of her eyes vanished. Her irises bled into a deep, pitch black, darker than the midnight sky, absorbing all the light in the room. A cold wave of ancient energy rolled off her body, so strong that Beta Tyler actually drew his weapon in fear. Instantly, the sweet, warm scent that had been calling to my wolf for the last hour vanished. It was erased and replaced by a strange, freezing void that felt like death itself. Her presence became hidden, masked by a power I had never felt before in my entire life. My heart skipped a beat. What was this? An omega could not do this. Nora looked at me through those black eyes, her face twisted into a cold, mocking smile that made my blood run cold. She didn't look like a prisoner anymore. She looked like a predator hiding in plain sight. "Take her away," I ordered quickly, my voice cracking slightly as a sudden wave of panic hit me. "Lock her in the lowest cells under maximum guard. Do not let anyone near her." The guards grabbed her chains, jerking her backward toward the exit. Nora didn't resist. She let them drag her away, her black eyes never leaving my face until the doors slammed shut behind her. I stood in the center of the room, my hands still shaking, my chest heaving as my wolf howled in deep, miserable regret. The elders were cheering, and Camille was celebrating her victory, but a horrible feeling settled deep in my stomach. I looked at the closed doors, my mind racing with terror. I thought I had just saved my pack by rejecting a weak servant. But looking at the dark energy she had left behind, I realized the terrifying truth. I hadn't broken a slave, I had just unleashed a monster.
