Chapter 008: Name Your Price

676 Words
Seeing Wen Ruo's shocked expression, Zhan Yan maintained his icy composure. "Don't get me wrong. My reluctance to divorce isn't about you-it's that I don't want to enter into a second marriage. Once I get a divorce, my mother will force me to marry another woman. The only reason I registered with you today was that I mistook you for the marriage partner arranged by my mother. I had never met her before. If you agree not to divorce, I will try to get along with you, and if, after a month, you don't meet my expectations, then we can divorce. You can also evaluate me. If you have any demands, make them now-I will do my best to meet them." Wen Ruo was bemused by Zhan Yan's words. But all she wanted was to end the conversation quickly; she was in a hurry to get back. "Mr. Zhan, let me be clear: I want a divorce. Very mu-very. It's not that I'm rejecting your offer out of hand-our values don't align. Not in a month, a year, or even ten years will that change." When Ruo's tone was calm, her eyes were resolute. Zhan Yan's countenance was stern and chilly. "Miss Wen, is it because you think my conditions are not good enough? Do you want your name added to the property deed? Or perhaps a large dowry of hundreds of thousands? Or are you looking for a car and jewelry? Name your price!" Zhan Yan's presumptuous tone triggered a laugh from Wen Ruo. Just as the wonton shop owner brought two bowls of wontons to the table, Wen Ruo stopped him. "Sir, please pack everything; we won't eat here." She couldn't stomach eating in the presence of such an arrogant man. "The wontons are on me, but there's nothing else to discuss." "When some..." As Wen Ruo got up to leave, Zhan Yan felt an inexplicable headache. He thought the negotiation would be smooth, but they needed help to start a proper conversation. "My name is Wen Ruo!" she corrected him. "Wen Ruo! Then what is your view on love?" Zhan Yan's question caught Wen Ruo off guard, but she responded without hesitation, "Pure, simple, and complementary. If it lasts a lifetime, that's best; if not, I can accept it." Wen Ruo's view on love was straightforward and genuine. To Zhan Yan, however, it seemed impractical. "What you describe seems like a fairy tale in today's society. It's not realistic." He wasn't pessimistic about love, but rather that pure and simple love was rare today. He had been groomed since childhood to take over the Zhan Xin Group with numerous younger siblings, all afraid of him. He believed in remaining unmarried and planned to groom one of his nephews or nieces as his successor in the future. This would reduce the worry and selfishness involved with someone else's child. If it weren't for 'that pot' saving his mother, he wouldn't have agreed to this arrangement. Now, instead of 'that pot,' 'this Wen something' had appeared, which could be just what he needed to dissuade his mother. He suspected that 'that pot' had ulterior motives all along. He planned to use Wen Ruo to stabilize his mother's expectations temporarily, preventing her from pushing him to marry 'that pot.' After some time, once 'that pot's' true nature was revealed, he would divorce this 'Wen something.' "Miss Wen, here is a car key for the black BYD parked outside and another for the apartment above my teahouse. You can think it over and move in any time you like." After speaking, Zhan Yan left the keys on the table and walked out. As Wen Ruo was about to chase after him, the owner finished packing the wontons and handed them to her. She had to stay to scan the code and make the payment. When Zhan Yan left the wonton shop and turned the corner, heading for the waiting Rolls-Royce by the curb where the bodyguard opened the door, Wen Ruo suddenly came out, carrying several parcels.
