Finally Home
He opened his eyes to find that he was surrounded by dead bodies that seemed to have been there for quite some time, as they were already beginning to bloat. The smell was beyond description; however, the only thing he was immediately aware of was an intense thirst. He spotted a canteen on the body nearest himself and and quickly raised it to gulp greedily. Once his thirst was slaked, he became aware of an almost unbearable pain in his head; gingerly touching it, he pulled away fingers that were soaked in blood. He wondered whether or not he was strong enough to stand. Placing his open palms on the ground, he found that he was able to raise himself to first a kneeling, then a standing, position. From this vantage point he looked around but could see nothing but more dead bodies.
