CHAPTER 5

1498 Words
Kael’s POV I didn’t even realize when I slept off, all I could remember was me sitting at the edge of the bed and my mind racing I thought. The next thing, darkness took over me but it wasn’t a peaceful sleep. I dreamt of how I was running very fast on barefoot. The ground wasn’t snowing anymore, but it was very wet and sticky like blood. The sharp smell seeped into my nostrils, every breath I took burned my throat severely, and I tried to stop running but my legs kept running faster and deeper into the thick forest. Rough branches scratched my skin terribly and things appeared behind me, covering me and hurting me seriously. My heartbeat grew very loud, so loud that I could hear it in my ears slamming against my chest. All of a sudden, I heard a low and familiar voice call my name “Kael stop running”. I froze and everything seemed to stop moving around me, even my breath hitched. Then, I turned gently and saw Damien stand in between the trees observing me. I noticed his eyes were wild, uncontrolled and they shone brighter than before like something inside him had broken loose. “Come close to me”, he said softly. I felt that strange and painful feeling pulling at my chest. I took a step backwards and said “no I won’t”. The expression on his face darkened, “you don’t have to reject me”. The air between us shifted to something suffocating and threatening. I tried to move my body but I felt frozen like something invisible was wrapped around me. Damien took a few steps closer to me, slow and controlled. He offered a warm smile and asked “do you feel it too?” My chest tightened the more and I hated the fact that he noticed it. I whispered, “stop it”. Deep down, I didn’t even know what I instructed to stop, whether it was the pull or the connection between us. Damien stopped right in front of me and he raised his hands to touch me. The moment his hands brushed through my skin, the pain exploded not just in my chest but everywhere like fire burning through my veins. I gasped and fell to my knees, crying loudly “what just happened?” He stopped in front of me, watching me without helping, then I heard him mutter “you are mine”. The word echoed loudly and terrifyingly in my mind and I shook my head slowly “no, I’m not”. After responding, something inside me that I couldn’t control whispered “yes” instead. I jerked up from the bed sweating profusely and gasping for breath. I still felt serious pains on my chest, like it was still happening. I pressed my hands on my chest and whispered, “calm down, it’s just a dream”, but deep inside me it was more than a dream. A sharp knock came at the door, before I could say “come in”, the door opened and a servant stepped in bowing to me “your presence is needed by the Alpha”. I froze instantly and I asked the servant “does he want to see me now?” He nodded swiftly, “yes of course”. Why does he want to see me? Without bugging myself with too many questions and thoughts, I stood up gently and my whole body was filled with sores and cuts. What has happened again or did I do something wrong this time? The servant responded swiftly, “no, you didn’t, besides that it doesn’t matter whatever you’ve done, when a king calls you have to obey. My mind was racing in different thoughts, till we got to where Damien was I didn’t even realize it. We stopped in front of a large door, bigger and heavier than others. The servant stepped forward and pushed it open “go inside”. I stepped inside alone and the room was different from the obsidian court. It was more private, cold and dangerous. Damien stood beside the window and his back was in front of me. A slow and endless snow fell outside, still he didn’t turn but I knew that he was aware of my presence. A heavy silence stretched between the both of us. After a few seconds, he asked me gently “were you asleep?” The question threw me off balance and I frowned at him. What kind of a question is that? “Yes, I slept”. He shook his head slowly like he already knew it. He continued, “you were restless and I could feel it”. What do you mean? My eyes widened, my pulse stiffened and his eyes locked with mine. He walked calmly towards me and muttered, “something reacted last night”. My chest tightened again and I felt that same painful pull. “Did you feel it too?” The words slipped out of my throat before I could control myself. There was a pause between us, then he replied “yes”. The word sounded simple but heavy to my ears. “What is really going on?” I asked without hesitation. Damien stood still and observed me for a long time, as though he was deciding if I deserve to know the truth. He finally responded, “you’re a human, Kael”. I interrupted immediately, “that’s not the answer to my question”. His expression darkened and he answered “I’m not done talking”. I caught his gaze while waiting for him to tell me the actual truth. He spoke softly while gently rubbing his hands together, “there’s something called a mate bond”. The expression on my face changed, I’ve heard of that word before from stories and it’s something relating to destinies and wolves. Damien continued, “it’s what connects two beings together beyond choice and reason”. I responded “no” immediately. That’s impossible, “I’m a human and you dislike humans too, so that doesn’t make any sense”. “Yes, I know but this is rare and unavoidable”, Damien muttered with a hint of a smile. My heart started pounding very fast and I took a step backwards, that’s when the strange pull and pains, the way Damien looks at me and reacts too seem realistic to me. “No, this can’t be true” I whispered to myself. “You are my mate”, Damien added. These words threw me off guard and shattered the little hope I had left in me. A suffocating silence settled in the whole room and I kept staring at him, hoping he’ll take those words back and tell me that it’s a joke or a mistake. Damien didn’t say anything but he kept on staring at me. “I can’t believe this”, I said while running my hands through my dark hair and my voice cracked a little. Damien gave a cold response, “and yet, here we are”. My chest hurt worse than before, it’s not just about the strange pull, but something deeper and heavier. This is really confusing, “I’m a sacrifice and you the Lycan king, how am I your mate? I asked while lost in thoughts. “Yes, I know like I said earlier this is rare and you can’t avoid it” Damien responded swiftly. “I can recall vividly that you despise humans like me” I continued. His jaw clenched and his expression became dangerous and cruel, then he answered “yes”. “Then you should reject it, break it or end it because I don't care”. The words slipped out of my throat sharp and uncontrolled. “Enough of that”, his voice cut in sharp and commanding and I shut my mouth instantly not because he yelled, but because his time demanded obedience. He turned and walked close to me, “you don’t get to decide on what to do about that”, he spoke in a cold tone. “Why can’t I decide?” Anger had built up inside me. Damien's eyes were still locked with mine and he said, “that’s because I haven’t decided if I want you or not”. These words pierced me harder than I thought, not because they were blunt, but because it’s the truth. I gulped deeply while my hands clenched slowly at my sides. “So, what am I then?” I asked deliberately because I wanted to clarify the truth. He cleared his throat and responded, “you are mine”. These words sounded more like a promise than just a simple response.
