Chapter 2: The Arrogant Lord II

2556 Words
SHANE BAKER I listened to the history teacher talk about the great pillars of our nation. Nadia looked at me with an annoyed expression. We were both sitting in the back, dead bored. Thank God the class ended, and we went back to the apartment. I sat on the couch, and Nadia sat next to me. She was my best friend. I have known her since we started college, and we have been living together ever since. She was very focused and studious, as well as beautiful and funny. Her reddish hair reached her shoulders, she had broad hips, and several freckles dotted her pale skin. It was perfect. I was just an ordinary girl. My long, light brown hair with blonde streaked ends reached my waist. My eyes were green, my waist was small, and my butt was huge, or so Nadia always said. We both worked in a small cafeteria. I had no siblings. I was an only child. My father died when I was a child, and my mother spent her time looking for love. That's why I decided to leave home. I couldn't stand her depression anymore because she couldn’t find a good man, as she would say. "I have a huge laziness," Nadia said. I looked at her and nodded in agreement. "I'm going to sleep with Clint. He says he has a surprise for me," she said, smiling. I smiled and nodded. Clint had been her boyfriend for three years. They got along very well, and Nadia was deeply in love. He was a good guy, very responsible, and adored Nadia. I liked him a lot. I was lonelier than a mushroom. It wasn't that I was against love, the truth was I had never met it, and at the rate I was going, maybe I never would. "I'm leaving, see you tomorrow," Nadia said. I nodded and kissed her on the cheek. I sat there doing nothing. My stomach growled, so I got up to make myself a sandwich. When I went to take the first bite, the doorbell rang. Damn! Who could be so inopportune? I reluctantly put down my delicious sandwich and opened the door. My crazy cousin Emily was standing in front of me with a wide smile. I stared at her, stunned. She was supposed to be in Finland. What the hell was she doing here? "Hello," she said and hugged me. "Emily, what are you doing here?" I asked, still stunned by her presence. "Come back," she said in a cheerful tone. "I know, I saw, but why?" I asked angrily. "Because yes, I was bored, happy?" she replied, and I looked at her, irritated. "Shane, I need you to help me," she continued, and I understood why she had come to see me. Now, what did my crazy cousin want? "Emily, I don't have money," I said, and she looked at me, irritated. "I don't want money. I want you to accompany me," she insisted, and I raised an eyebrow at her. "Where?" I asked cautiously. Emily was so crazy that she could tell me to go to a jungle without thinking twice about it. "To a nightclub," she said, and I frowned at her. "No thanks, I have classes tomorrow," I said, but she grabbed my shoulders, looking at me pleadingly. "I'm asking you as a cousin," she said, and I rolled my eyes. "You always use that 'cousin' excuse," I said angrily. "Please," she pleaded. Damn, how do I get out of this? "Shane, please, I'm begging you," she said, clasping her hands together in a plea. Damn it. "Fine, but only for a while. I have an exam tomorrow," I relented, and she hugged me frantically. Why did I have such a crazy cousin? We got ready to go to the damn club. My crazy cousin wore a tiny red dress that perfectly highlighted her small hips and pronounced bust. Her blonde hair fell to her shoulders, and she walked around in femme fatale heels. I just wore black jeans, a gold blouse, and my black booties, with my hair down and some mascara. I'm not going to flirt. I don't even know how to do that. The colored lights and the intense noise had left me deaf. We walked among the young people who danced madly. A man beckoned to my cousin, and she pulled me along to reach him. Once close, they gave each other a passionate kiss. I obviously wanted him to swallow the dirt. While they showed their affection, they detached themselves, and I looked at Emily angrily. "Shane, this is Daniel. Dan, this is Shane Baker, my cousin," said Emily, introducing us. The man shook my hand and smiled. "Nice to meet you," he said, and I smiled back out of obligation. He was tall, with tousled blonde hair, and it was clear he liked to party. "Girls, I introduce you to Austin Wells, my cousin," he said, pointing to a man sitting at the table. Austin had piercing blue eyes, white skin, brown hair, and wore a gray T-shirt with a black leather jacket. He looked casual but sophisticated, very well put together. Although he looked at us haughtily, I had to admit that his penetrating gaze had me spellbound. "She's Emily, and her cousin, Shane," Daniel finished. Austin still didn't say anything, he just looked at us. "Hello," Emily said happily. He nodded curtly. I thought he wasn't talkative at all. We all sat at the table. I ended up next to him. The truth was, he was very handsome. He had an intense look, and that mole near his mouth made him look very sexy. But it seemed like he wasn’t having fun. He had a glass of some expensive drink in his hand and didn’t even look at us. Emily and Daniel talked animatedly between caresses and kisses, and I was dying of boredom. Austin was very attractive, but he was an arrogant annoyance. "Let's dance," my cousin said, pulling Daniel to the floor, and leaving me alone with Mr. Arrogant. I took a sip of my drink while he checked his cell phone. It was clear he was more than annoyed. "And do you study or work?" I said to break the silence. He lit a cigarette and inhaled the smoke. "Don't you know?" he asked, as if it were obvious, exhaling the smoke from the cigarette. "No," I said, confused. He stared at me. "I own some telecommunications companies," he said smugly. "Ok, and what do you like to do?" I asked, and he looked at me as if I were mentally retarded. "Are you a policeman or something?" he asked in a cold voice. "No, it's just to make a little conversation," I replied, and he raised an eyebrow. Silence reigned again while he was on his cell phone. "I hate dancing," I said, breaking the silence. Anything but this silence, though it was ironic since the music was resonating at full volume. "No," he said dryly without looking at me. "If you don't know, it doesn't matter. I'm not very coordinated either," I added, but he interrupted me. "I know how to dance," he said, staring at me. I was dumbfounded, lost in his blue gaze. "Then... you just don't want to dance with me," I said, and he c****d his head to let me know that I had hit the nail on the head. "Exactly," he said and looked back at his cell phone. What an i***t, I thought. It was going to be a long night. "Shall we dance?" I whispered to myself. He smiled sideways, looking at his cell phone. I didn't think he heard me. Did he? "Shall we dance?" a boy asked, pulling me out of my thoughts. He was looking at me very happily. I guessed it was because of the drinks he was carrying. "No, thanks," I said and smiled shyly. "Come on, come on, don't make me beg," he insisted. I looked at him and shook my head. "No," I repeated, and the guy looked at me angrily. "You're very hot, let's go have some fun," he said, and I glared. "f**k you," I said angrily. Why did I come here? I should kill Emily, I thought. He then grabbed my arm, scaring me. I struggled to get away, but he held on tighter, hurting me. "Let go," Austin said in a hoarse voice. The i***t who had my arm and I turned to look at Austin's piercing and cold gaze fixed on the asshole next to me. "What?" said the man without letting go. "Let her go. She already told you she doesn't want to dance. Are you deaf or an imbecile?" Austin said coldly. I was speechless, he had been so aloof all night, and now he was defending me. I thought he must be bipolar. "And if not?" the guy next to me replied arrogantly. Austin smiled and snapped his fingers. In less than two microseconds, several guards were behind the poor drunk, holding his hands behind his back as if he were under arrest or something like that. The drunk was cursing under his breath. My mouth fell open as I looked at Austin in a daze. How did this happen? "How... how did you do that?" I asked with a frown. "Do what?" he replied dismissively. "Those guards obeyed you instantly," I said, stunned. "Of course. That's what I'm paying them for," he said smugly. I frowned, even more confused. "Do you own this place?" I asked. He looked at me as if to say, "Obviously, fool." He got up and took my hand. I stared at him, stunned. "Let's dance," he said, and I frowned. "I thought you didn't want to dance with me," I said, and he smiled. Damn, that smile was fascinating. I went along with him, closing my eyes when I felt him so close to me. He was very handsome and smelled like the expensive perfume of the rich. He stared at me, and I didn't know if it was the lighting, but his blue eyes seemed to shine brightly. I didn't know how long I had been glued to him, letting him move at his slow and coordinated pace. I was very confused. Less than an hour ago, he had completely ignored me. I could even say he had treated me like some silly little girl. Then he defended me from the drunken i***t, and now he had me pressed against his firm body, looking at me with that intense blue gaze. "What's up with the lovebirds?" Daniel said behind us. I let go of his grip, and he looked at his cousin irritably. Emily was next to him, smiling like a fool, and I rolled my eyes. "I have to go," I said, stepping forward, but Emily pulled at my arm. "Wait, it's too early," said my unbearable cousin. "I told you I have classes tomorrow," I said, and she looked at me, irritated. "Goodbye," I said, looking at Austin. He looked back at me but didn't say anything. "Goodbye, Shane," Daniel said, taking Emily by the waist and pulling her close. My cousin shook her head in irritation, and I quickly walked away. I left the noise behind. It was dark, and several people were trying to get in. I didn't know what was wrong with me. My heart was pounding wildly. Austin was an indecipherable man, or maybe he was just bipolar. The truth was, I didn’t really know if I had run away because I needed to get up early for my exam or because of his intense gaze that was fixed in my mind. ... Austin The music echoed in my ears. Shane had just left, and Daniel, the i***t, was dancing passionately with his girlfriend or friend, I wasn't sure which. I didn’t even know why I wanted to follow her, it wasn’t that I cared, it was just different. When they arrived, I decided to ignore them. They were just kids, as I had imagined. But after seeing how that i***t was bothering her, something made me want to protect her, even though she could defend herself quite well. She wasn’t a fragile, insecure child, maybe that was why she caught my attention. What the hell was I thinking? I should just leave. "I have to go," I said and left the place without even waiting for Daniel’s response. Noah was waiting outside and opened the car door for me. I got in, and Noah started the engine. I looked out the window and saw her standing on the sidewalk, waiting for a taxi. I should have just driven past her, but it was late, and it was unlikely any transport would come by. "Noah, park in front of that girl," I said, and Noah nodded, parking and rolling down the window. "I don’t think a taxi will come at this hour," I said, and she looked at me, dazed. "It will come," she said after composing herself. "Get in, I'll give you a ride," I said, and she looked at me with a raised eyebrow. "No, thanks," she replied, staring ahead. No one had ever told me no before. What the hell was her problem? I should just leave. "Do you want to get mugged?" I asked, and she looked at me again. Why was I doing this? Why didn’t I just leave? Maybe I liked arguing with her. "Get in," I said bluntly. "You’re so bossy," she said, narrowing her eyes. She should obey me, why wasn’t she doing what I said? This kid was irritating. I signaled to Noah. He understood my order, got out of the car, and helped her inside. Of course, she put up a fight, but eventually, she got in, sat beside me, and looked at me with annoyance. "Are you kidnapping me?" she asked sarcastically. I wanted to laugh but stopped myself. "Don’t be childish. Give your address to Noah," I said coldly. She rolled her eyes, and I was tempted to give her a good spanking for being cheeky, but I stopped myself. She wasn’t my lover. I had no right to spank her. Damn, this was frustrating. Shane gave directions to Noah, and he drove to the address. We were silent. She looked out the window while I glanced at her from the corner of my eye. She couldn’t be more than 20 years old. Her long brown hair cascaded down her back, her skin was pale, and her jeans clung to her slim waist, accentuating her firm rear. She had full lips and bright green eyes. She was very attractive but cheeky. Noah parked outside her building, and she looked at me intently. "Thanks for the ride," she said with disgust. I looked at her and nodded curtly. She shook her head irritably. "Thanks, Noah," she said sweetly. Great, she thanked Noah politely. He nodded and then looked at me. I gave him a scathing look even though he wasn’t at fault. She got out of the car, and I watched her through the window. "Goodbye, Mr. Wells," she said with mockery. I didn’t say anything, just stared at her and rolled up the window. That kid was completely crazy.
