Chapter 34: The Fracture of Fate
Elara lit a cigarette, leaned against the balcony railing, and watched the city flicker below. The blood bond still pulsed faintly on her wrist, like a second heartbeat she couldn’t shake.
“You’re thinking about it again,” Raphael said, standing beside her, arms crossed.
“I’m thinking about a lot of things,” she said, exhaling smoke. “Like how Echo looked when he fell. Like how you didn’t stop me.”
“I didn’t have to,” he said. “You made your choice.”
“And you just let me go.”
“I let you fight,” he corrected. “There’s a difference.”
She looked at him, eyes sharp. “You still don’t trust me, do you?”
He didn’t answer right away. He looked out at the skyline, then back at her. “I trust you more than I’ve ever trusted anyone. That’s the problem.”
She laughed, but it was hollow. “That’s not a problem. That’s an excuse.”
He didn’t argue. He just stood there, quiet, the way he always was when he knew she was right.
---
Inside, the room was dim, the silence thick with things unsaid.
“You think this changes anything?” she asked, sitting down.
“No,” he said. “It doesn’t. But it proves something.”
“To who? You? Me?”
“To both of us.”
She stared at the floor. “I didn’t want to need you.”
“But you do.”
She didn’t respond. She didn’t have to.
---
Later, she stood in front of the mirror, rolling down her sleeve to cover the bond. It still moved, still pulsed, still whispered in a language only she could hear.
Raphael watched from the doorway.
“You okay?” he asked.
She nodded. “Yeah.”
He didn’t believe her, but he didn’t push.
She didn’t need him to.
